Theaters were the only way for Mongolians to view legitimate foreign content until 2004 when the first modern multi-screen cinema was introduced. Currently there are only 11 screens in Mongolia. Movie theater attendance has increased each year from 2010 to 2012, but declined slightly in 2013. Mongolia needs more theaters and screens to increase access to foreign films, as global data shows much higher theater attendance, more screens, and lower population per screen in other countries. New opportunities are emerging in Mongolia for video on demand and IPTV/digital cable services to provide more access to foreign content beyond theaters.
