This document discusses the confidentiality of patent application information and circumstances where patent application information and records may be made available to the public. It addresses:
1) Published, abandoned patent applications have their file contents available to the public. Published pending applications allow copies of the application and file contents with payment of fees.
2) Unpublished, abandoned applications may have their file contents available if identified in another published patent document. This also applies if the abandoned application claims benefit of another published application.
3) Status information (e.g. pending, abandoned, patented) may be communicated for applications identified in published patent documents or applications, along with identifiers like application numbers.
