Tell me in no more than 20 words, what is your FMP
idea?
Funny movie trailer with a fight scene in it, plus
other promotion
Why have you decided to make it? I have decided to do this, as I have done my own
research on fight scenes and enjoy the rapid pace
movement and other techniques (such as moving
with the action) that are used. Furthermore, I am
especially fond of the humour genre and action
movies, even more so of humour and action, such as
that utilized by the actor Jackie Chan.
What about your project makes it important to
you?
As this is my final project this year, it is very
important in terms of both grades and being able to
have a piece of work that I can show as a submission
when/if I apply for Uni or a Job. I am wanting to do
my very best and aim for as high a mark as I can get,
while showing off all that I have learnt this year and
learning more than I already know.

Outline some of the initial influences on your idea/work
and some potential research targets (remember,
research isn’t just a paper-based activity)
Jackie Chan fight scenes are a good one to look at in
terms of action comedy and making good use of
locations. I find that they are fast paced and unique, as
the directors let him come up with a lot of improvisation
at said locations with what they’ve got, e.g., going
through a shopping trolly.
Another influence for my work is Edgar Wright, as his
style of fast-paced comedy is interesting and unique,
utilising things such as objects suddenly coming into
frame, using quick shots with zooms and light flashes,
etc… His style of comedy is one that I have been
interested in throughout this year, and I hope to take a
lot of inspiration from his style of techniques when I
create my work. One bit being his ability to make boring
actions seem interesting though the use of zooms in and
out, rapid camera movement, light flashes and fast-
paced cuts.
What effect do you want to have on your audience
when they see your project?
I want my audience to feel uplifted, and happy after
watching something humourful, while also feeling as
though the was a lot of action, to make it both funny and
cool at the same time. I hope that people are entertained
by my work, and inspired by it, like I have been inspired
by Jackie Chan and Edgar Wright.

Describe the tone/mood/style of your project [which
production techniques/characteristics are you
employing?]
I aim for the tone to be funny, while also being able to
transition into a tense and serious mood, and then
back again. I want it to be a comedy, that can break
the pace in a funny and dramatic way. I am hoping to
achieve this by utilising Edgar wrights type of fast-
paced camera work and tense music, as well as the
style of using normal sound effects in weird ways and
breaking the music and starting it back up again. In
terms of comedy in the action, I am hoping to build
this mood by following Jackie Chans style of the
character being massively overwhelmed and trying to
get away from the fighting. They may be difficult to
blend these styles together, but ultimately the end
goal is an action comedy that really catches peoples
attention and stands out.
Why have you decided to make your project in this
style?
Because this is a style that has interested me the most,
and one that I have been researching for a while now. I
have a lot of experience in editing and should be cable
enough to achieve what I want, as I am hoping to do a
lot of filming and directing, as camera work and
composition has become my focus of interest as of
lately. Plus the is a lot of planning that goes into
making an action movie, and a lot of thought that goes
into comedy, which I am really looking forward to the
process of.

Initial Reaction
My initial thoughts about the FMP are that I am wanting to make an action comedy, similar in
styles to both Jackie Chan and Edgar Wright. I am thinking that I am going to create a trailer, in
which I can utilise the funniest and most action filled ideas that I will come up with, while not
having to provide too much context (unless is needed for humour. I am also thinking about
making addition promotion, such as movie posters or magazine covers, as I am quite good at both
photoshop, editing and also camera work.

The idea has the potential to go wrong, however if done correctly it could become great. I think
that what I need to double down in is the planning phase, as I quite confident in my abilities
when it comes to production/post production, and need to focus on making sure that my pre
production is at the same level, if not even better.

This colour pallet from ’The Batman’ is one which I like, as it is similar with my overall
colour pallet, with its use of both warm and cold colours, with the warmer colours standing
out much more against the colder background (and vise versa). The colour pallet feels
quite serious, with colder tones being more spread across the screen than the warmer
tones, the difference in colour and lighting helps draw the eye of the viewer much more,
as the contrast creates a great scene. I hope to utilize a similar colour pallet in my
production, as I quite like the contrast it creates; however, I plan on toning down the level
of blues to make it less serious feeling, and make it seem a bit more normal, as this level of
blue is abnormal.

Mood Board Analysis
The images I have chosen are mostly all
quite warm and bright, however I plan on
utilizing a few colder colors to provide a
sense of contrast. I am sure that I may end
up deciding on different colour thymes
depending on what I want to present in a
scene, however seeing as this is a trailer, I
am likely to keep to the contrasting cold and
warm colours.
Most of these images are quite pain in tone,
as they are not necessarily too dark or
bright, as comedies do not need to be
extremely dark like horror movies, or
extremely bright like adventure movies. I
may choose to utilize some of Edgar Wrights
camera flashes or darker/lighter tones
depending on whether the plot/mood fits it.

From this work I have conclude that my main
character is going to be struggling with things to
begin with, in a depressing way (as a lot of the
images feature depressed themes), an that as
the movie (trailer) progresses, their mood will
change, and so will the colour of their clothes.
Furthermore, they will be edgy like one of those
cool dudes, but in a funny way where they act
edgy, and it doesn’t work in the slightest.
These characters are all side or main
characters that are comedic relief, from
this I have decided to make my 2nd main
character similar in terms of being the
comedic relief and quite stupid.

Edgar Wright Inspiration
Edgar wright, the director/screen righter of Shawn of The Dead, Hot Fuzz and Scott Pilgrim vs the
World, is an English Film Maker who produces fast pace satirical films. He studied visual design at
Poole College of Art in 1992, despite it not being his first choice for the course, as he had been told
twice that he needed more experience for the film and television course (which is quite ironic
because people in said course may now be studying his films).
However, due to not joining this course he decide to make a movie in his hometown, which
kickstarted his career.
Edgar Wright is a man who took matters into is own hands, despite being told that he was lacking, he
continued onwards and became the huge success he is today.
His approach to work is one with good humor and dedication to overcoming difficulties.
When approaching an adaptation, as apposed to an original script, he tries to avoid ‘instilling your
own personality into it’, as one of the main issues that I and many others have with modern day
movie adaptations, is the fact that a lot of the director always tend to forget the purpose of the
original piece and instead make it about using it as a medium to get their own messages or
personality across, as apposed to focusing on making a truly great and entertaining piece; which
Edgar is aware of.
Edgar also enjoys working with directors/screen righters with different opinions, as he can tell them
his ideas and get better objective feedback.
‘but the main thing is you just have to be extremely tenacious and not give up. The good thing to
know is that if you feel like everything’s a challenge, that’ll never get easier. And it never should get
easier. The point where work gets easier, you’re being complacent, and the work suffers. And no
point in my career have I felt like stuff has been easy to get going’ – Edgar's approach to work is that
it should be difficult, and that getting past those difficulties is what makes a truly great
screenwriter/producer
Edgar Wright is a man who utilizes physical humour, stylized editing and sound mixing to create his
movies, as apposed to the much more modern movies with character archetypes and comical
dialogue. Edgar Wright stands out from the crowd of directors and screen righters, as a man who can
appreciate the true beauty of the art of comedy and continues to keep the art alive and well, as
opposed to bending the knee to what I personally considered easy and lazy comedy writing.

Jackie Chan
Jackie Chan has stared in many popular movies such as: The Spy Next-door, Rush Hour, The Karate
Kid and many other popular movies.
When it comes to Jackie Chans approach to action Comedy the are 9 specific aspects he focuses on
that I have picked out.
1. Starting with a disadvantage
2. He uses the environment around him, and will of ten go to locations and help plan the action
scenes
3. He uses clear and unconfusing shots
4. He tries to show both the action taking place, and the reaction to it in the same frame
5. He does as many takes until it is right
6. Focuses on showing the pain to humanize it
7. Makes sure the character earns the win properly

Sam Mendes
Sam Mende, the director of 1917, Skyfall and Specter, is an English film and theatre director born in 1965.
He has written some of his own beliefs of steps for being a happy director:
1. Always choose good collaborators.
2. Try to learn how to make the familiar strange, and the strange familiar.
3. Learn to say, ‘I don’t know’.
4. If you are doing a play or film, have a secret way in (to connect to it).
5. Confidence is essential, but ego is not.
6. The is no right or wrong, only interesting or less interesting.
7. The journey is the destination. DO not think about product, or god forbid, audience response.
8. Learn when to shut up.
9. Learn to accept blame for everything. If the script was poor, you did not work hard enough with the writers. If the
actors failed, you failed them. If the sets, the lighting, the posters and the costumes are wrong, you gave them the
thumbs up. Your shoulders need to be broad.

Sam is a man who, at the age of 56, has had lots of experience in the
directing industry. He knows how lucky he is and appreciates the fact that he
gets to do what he loves. He knows that you need to work hard with those
around you and learn to discus with a wide range of people who are
knowledgeable in different ways to you.
He is an innovative person, who managed to direct 1917, a movie that was
shot to look like one shot, despite it being made up of multiple shot blended
to look like one.
His approach to work is being happy and thankful, taking responsibility for
mistakes, and learning from others.

Why are you making this project?
• I am making this project as it is my FMP, and I want
to make a great project that I can use as evidence of
skill when applying to Uni or for jobs in the Film
industry. I am also making this project as I feel a
great appreciation for the art of comedy, as well as
the fluid motion of action that film can create. The
pure immersion and opportunity for one to express
their thoughts, feelings, sweat and blood into a truly
great piece of work excites me.

Hopes for the FMP
• I hope that my FMP becomes a great, comedic
and entertaining piece that can bring a
moment of laughter or enjoyment into this
world. Furthermore, I hope to achieve a level
of work that will convince people that I have
potential.

Strengths and Limitations
Strengths:
• Have access to equipment from college, as well as my own equipment.
• Have access to editing software at home, and am quite capable in the
editing department.
• I have been told that I have a good eye for camera work.
Limitations:
• Don’t really have any money in the budget for this, so may be restricted in
terms of staff, locations and props.
• Lack experience behind sets

Potential Research Activities
• Surveys on what colours people associate with
comedy movies (quantitative data).
• Asking what aspects people think make a good
comedy movie and also another one about what
makes a good fight scene.(qualitative data).
• Another potential research activity could be looking
at other trailers in same field and coming up with a
list of what they all do.
