13 Smart Ways To Measure Your Tech
Team's Productivity
Innovation
Forbes Technology Council COUNCIL POST | Paid Program
When leading a tech team, it’s important to measure your team’s overall productivity.
This metric can be used for major business decisions down the line. However, measurin

your tech team’s productivity isn’t as simple as counting revenue gained or units
produced. Beyond the outcome of the project, there are several other factors that should
be taken into account.
Below, 13 members of Forbes Technology Council share the most effective ways of
evaluating team productivity.
1. Improvement Per Sprint
Make sure agile teams keep a sprint backlog so they can record and measure their own
productivity. Team size, iteration length and project structure usually have the biggest
impact on performance. These will give you some insight into the team’s effort (work
hours spent) and productivity (achievement of goals over time), which you can use to
distribute technical skill sets and drive collaboration. - Nacho De Marco, BairesDev
2. Culture And Open Team Communication
Regularly syncing with the team is key to seeing if the team is being stretched. Build a
culture where open communication is welcomed and where empathy becomes a key tra
of leaders. Understand that each person is driven by different goals, and help to
accelerate their goals—both these things will pay back with dividends. - Jason Lau,
Crypto.com
Forbes Technology Council is an invitation-only community for world-class CIOs, CTOs
and technology executives. Do I qualify?
3. Contribution To Business Value
The technical team’s engagement in the business is critical to driving business value.
How a technical team engages with the business is a nontangible business value. Helpin
marketing drive the brand messaging, easing the burden on finance or making data
available to executives are all examples of business value delivered by tech that go
beyond revenue and units produced. - David Torres, Feedme Inc.
4. Reliability And Predictability
I’m not after tech teams for productivity, but for reliability. When they say, “We’re goin
to be finished” with a project, they better really finish, ideally with no bugs to be caught
in production. You don’t always have visibility into why someone works slowly or quick
—but at least you can control quality. - Vaclav Vincalek, Future Infinitive
5. Efficiency
Efficiency is key. Did the tasks assigned meet the timelines and not go over the budget?
Did it produce the results expected? Were there any new ideas that created value or
lessons learned for other projects? - Bhavna Juneja, Infinity, a Stamford Technology
Company
6. Quality Of Work Produced
Productivity can be difficult to measure with tech teams, but identifying deliverables th
can be used to measure productivity is the key. Once deliverables (for example, routine
maintenance such as security audits) are identified you can then grade the quality and
speed of delivery of those deliverables to measure productivity. - Michael Hoyt, Life
Cycle Engineering, Inc.
7. Team Velocity And Temperature
Simply put, we calculate team velocity by adding the story points of the completed sprin
and evaluating it against the committed scope. A qualitative approach is not enough;
hence we also assess the temperature of the team in terms of mood, engagement,
collaboration and well-being. A happy team is a productive team. - Masha Sharma,
RealAtom
8. Scrum Points
This is the beauty of running Scrum. We, ourselves, gamify it. Ultimately, our definition
of “done” distributes points dependent on how complicated a task is. The people who Q
the task also receive some of the points from the task. We create scoreboards and teams
Ultimately, everything runs pretty consistently in terms of points and the game. We the
evaluate the Sprint through our velocity. - WaiJe Coler, InfoTracer
9. How Quickly And Cheaply They Fail
The most productive teams can deliver small increments regularly while maintaining th
same quality level. This ability is mostly characteristic of mature teams that can fail fast
and cheap while increasing the innovation velocity and keeping users happy. - Alexandr
Galkin, Competera
10. Client Satisfaction
Like other tech leaders, we regularly track metrics to understand where we can iterate
and improve. But the biggest indicator that we’re succeeding is client satisfaction. It’s
imperative that we deliver our software-engineering services at the highest quality with
the least amount of turnaround time. Any results less than this show that there’s room
for improvement. - Marc Fischer, Dogtown Media LLC
11. Value To The Customer
Value to the customer—quality coupled with on-time delivery—is the best metric of a
tech team’s productivity (or at least it should be!). And value isn’t just about output and
product delivery. It’s also about communication and responsiveness to keep customers
informed. - John McDonald, ClearObject
12. Speediness Of Learning
The tech world is always changing, and it’s changing fast. So, when evaluating your tech
team’s productivity, it’s important to take into account the speed at which they’re able t
learn. When your tech team can master something new quickly, you can create new
products quickly. - Thomas Griffin, OptinMonster
13. The Bigger Teamwork Picture
Productivity is interacting and working with others, inside and outside the team, so
honesty and a 360-degree view are essential. How is the team perceived by other teams
and individuals in the company, such as marketing or sales, finance or even other tech
teams? - Wolfgang Thieme, BehrTech
