ENERGY The ability to do work When work is done on an object energy is transferred. 2 types Kinetic – moving objects KE = ½ mv 2 Potential – stored energy
2 types of Potential Gravitational – depends on objects height PE = mgh Elastic – potential energy of something that is stretched or compressed
Forms of Energy 15-1
Mechanical Energy Energy associated with motion and position of everyday objects It is the sum of potential and kinetic energy
Thermal Energy Total potential and kinetic energy of all microscopic particles in an object When particles move faster the thermal energy increases
Chemical Energy Energy stored in the chemical bonds of a compound Energy is released when bonds are broken
Electrical Energy Energy associated with electrical charges These charges exert forces that do work EX batteries and lightening
Electromagnetic Energy Energy that travels through space in waves Often used in communications
Nuclear Energy Energy stored in atomic nuclei Nuclear Fission releases energy by splitting nuclei Nuclear Fussion releases energy when nuclei form a massive nucleus – This is the power of the sun Nuclear power plants produce electricity Atoms are split and the heat generated is used to heat water Steam Spins turbines making electricity
