Elements of design are those components which the
designers employ in all forms of their art and design-
whether it is in designing of garments, painting,
buildings, sculptors etc. understanding of these
elements and using them in different ways enables the
designer to produce different art and visual effects.
 DOT
 LINE
 SHAPE
 COLOR
 TEXTURE
These elements of design may be used on garment in a
variety of ways. They can be used in the construction
of garment introducing seams, tucks, pleats, hemline,
dart or panels. Even usage of buttons, embroidery,
trims, beading, piping or any kind of surface
ornamentation on garments.
 Dot is considered to be the basic element of design.
Without a dot we cant start a design. It is the smallest
and simplest unit of design. When more dots at one
place or joined together indicates groupism. More
points scattered at one place indicates expansion. Even
size of dots convey message just like bigger dots –
enlarge the surface appearance. That is if a thin figure
wear a dress of bigger dots can conceal the figure.
 When dots are places in one behind one it can indicate
a direction. A chain of dots represent a line. Even a
row of buttons stitched vertically or horizontally on a
dress conveys difference.

 Line is a spontaneous mode of expression. It is a chain
joined together indicating direction. Line is the
simplest and most important of design element just
like dot. There are many kinds of lines – diagonal,
perpendicular, horizontal, vertical, thick, thin, zig zag,
straight lines, dotted line, undulating and spiral lines
etc.
 More over illusions are created with lines. Even usage
of zippers, tucks, pleats, panel, seams, yokes etc
depicts line resemblance that can be even in curvy
design followed by curvy line. Lines in a garments
moves our eyes to the direction of line.

 Shape is a space enclosed by lines. For example a
silhouette is the outer shape of the garment. A shape is
the structural and decorative feature of the garment
including – silhouette, pockets, yokes, collar etc.
natural shapes are found in nature they are usually
curved. Geometric shapes, abstract shape are the
others. Different shape conveys a stable response to
our sense or to the wearer. Silhouette is a major part of
shape and you might have notice varied varieties of
shapes in our day to day dresses we wear.

Shapes when over done
create confusion to eyes.
 The very first thing that we notice about a garment is color.
Hence color is most important of all the design elements.
Color has three sections to say hue, value and intensity.
Hue is that dimension of color which has a specific name
and distinguishes from another color. Value depicts the
lightness or darkness of a color. A lighter color has bigger
value than a darker color. White has the largest value and
black has the lowest. Intensity signifies the brightness or
dullness of a color.
 Just like lines; color also conveys message for the wearer.
Colors with greater value make larger area, weight. Other
than that some colors outstands the personality of the
wearer such as red is for confident and commands
attraction, yellow bold and electric stands out. Green
symbolizes nature, pink for sweetness innocence etc.

 Texture is the characteristic structure as well as the
surface quality of the material. The feeling by touch. A
fabric is usually touched for its feel. There are two
types of texture tactile and visual. Tactile can be felt
through hands or touch the surface will be having
some effect. Visual textures can be surface
ornamentation, print, color, embroidery, smocking,
quilting etc.
 The look created by bold prints, checks fur textures,
corduroy etc makes the figure look bigger. In fashion
design texture mainly falls on the fall of fabric on body
and the prints or extra design on the finish made in it.
