- 1. 1 Module Title : Exploring Basic Visual Arts Course Title : Visual Techniques Course No. : DT 112 Course Description : This course is the instruction of fine arts medium and its impact to the artist’s perspective for the development of techniques and ideas to improve manipulation of skills in arts and mediums of practices allowing to expose talents in public exhibitions. Total Learning Time : 2 units (1 hour lecture + 2 hours laboratory = 3 hours/week) Overview : This module is designed to understand the concept, idea and how to apply different mediums particular to the point of view in making drawing, paint and color. Thus, it will influence student character and motivate them in the application of principles and elements to improve manipulation of skills in arts and mediums of practices allowing to expose talents in public exhibitions. Its wide ambit renders meaningless any attempt at definition, so rather than define or compose some diluted meaning for it, here is a list of its constituent disciplines. What Does Visual Art Include? Definitions of visual art usually encompass the following: 1. Fine Arts All fine art belongs to the general category of visual arts. These include activities such as: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture, along with associated activities like Graphic art, Manuscript Illumination, Book Illustration, Calligraphy and Architecture.

Contemporary Arts The visual arts also include a number of modern art forms, such as: Assemblage, Collage, Mixed-media, Conceptual Art, Installation, Happenings and Performance art, along with film-based disciplines such as Photography, Video Art and Animation, or any combination thereof. This group of activities also includes high tech disciplines like computer graphics and giclee prints. Another modern visual art, is the new environmental or Land art, which also includes transitory forms like ice/snow sculpture, and (presumably) graffiti art. 3. Decorative Arts & Crafts In addition, the general category of visual arts encompasses a number of decorative art disciplines and crafts, including: ceramics and studio pottery, mosaic art, mobiles, tapestry, glass art (including stained glass), and others. 4. Other Wider definitions of visual art sometimes include applied art areas such as graphic design, fashion design, and interior design. In addition, new types of Body art may also fall under the general heading of visual arts. These include: tattoo art, face painting, and body painting. THE QUALITIES OF GREAT ART Art Appreciation is the knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that identify all great art. The more you appreciate and understand the art of different eras, movements, styles and techniques, the better you can develop, evaluate and improve your own artwork. Each of our units below examines famous works of art and explores what makes them the masterpieces we appreciate today. Our Art History Timelines offer a brief explanation of the most important movements and styles in their historical order. They also list the major artists and illustrate a key work from each movement. Art Movements are the collective titles that are given to artworks which share the same artistic ideas, style, technical approach or time frame. They are a historical convenience for grouping together artists of a common period, style or technique so that they may be more easily understood. Art Movements are usually named retrospectively by art critics or historians and their titles are often witty or sarcastic nicknames pulled from a bad review. Portraits express the beauty, status, power, wealth or character of their subjects. Artists use a wide range of media for portraiture, including drawing, printing, painting, sculpture, photography and multimedia. Still Life is the drawing and painting of items such as fruit, flowers and household objects, which are usually arranged on a table top or shelf. Over the centuries artists have chosen to paint still life objects for their symbolism, abstract qualities or simply their visual beauty. Our Landscapes gallery celebrates artwork from around the world based on the built environment. It displays famous paintings of towns and buildings that have inspired artists to share their feelings about the surroundings we have constructed for ourselves. Animals in Art have always been a popular subject. They are often depicted for their natural beauty and majesty, or as mythical or symbolic beasts. Sometimes they are portrayed as the hunter's prey, prize livestock, or more sentimentally as domestic pets. Graphic Designers create visual solutions to sell or communicate the concept of a product, campaign or event. Their work includes illustration, typography, posters, packaging, corporate identities, advertising campaigns, web design and digital multimedia. In the visual arts—in particular painting, graphic design, photography, and sculpture—composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements or ingredients in a work of art, as distinct from the subject of a work. It can also be thought of as the organization of the elements of art according to the principles of art. The term composition means 'putting together,' and can apply to any work of art, from music to writing to photography, that is arranged or put together using conscious thought. In the visual arts, composition is often used interchangeably with various terms such as design, form, visual ordering, or formal structure, depending on the context. In graphic design for press and desktop publishing composition is commonly referred to as page layout. Elements of art The various visual elements, known as elements of design, formal elements, or elements of art, are the vocabulary with which the visual artist composes. These elements in the overall design usually relate to each other and to the whole art work. The elements of design are: Line — the visual path that enables the eye to move within the piece
- 5. 5 Shape — areas defined by edges within the piece, whether geometric or organic Color — hues with their various values and intensities Texture — surface qualities which translate into tactile illusions Tone — Shading used to emphasize form Form — 3-D length, width, or depth Space — the space taken up by (positive) or in between (negative) objects Depth — perceived distance from the observer, separated in foreground, background, and optionally middle ground
