COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT
• Cognitive – refers to patterns of thinking which include reasoning, ability to
learn, remembering and solving problems.
• As a learner hoping to have a good career someday, the development of your
cognitive is important.
• Your ability to learn will greatly determine the height of literacy you can attain
and work you can achieve.
• Three important cognitive skills you need to develop: remembering, critical
thinking, and problem solving.
REMEMBERING
•Remembering- is a function of the brain that
depends on short long term memory, if you
cannot remember learning become impossible.
THROOP AND CASTELUCCI (2011) LISTED
WAYSTO IMPROVEYOUR MEMORY
• Repetition- going over a material repeatedly improves your memory.,
as the old saying goes “practices makes perfect” if you keep repeating
something. It increases the chance of remembering it.
• Organization- organizing things or ideas in your head helps, you may
classify thing according to their common features.
• Mnemonics- is a devices that aids your memory, acronyms and rhymed
words are kinds of mnemonics that work.
CRITICALTHINKING
• Critical thinking comes from the word KRITIKOS ( meaning judgement)
• Critical thinking implies the judgment based on standards.
• It require ability to reason out (logical thinking) infer, analyze, interpret and explain.
• You will need to discern between facts and opinion.
• Facts- is something that is true and can be proven.
• Opinion- based on your own values and assumptions that may not be necessarily be
true for others
• To think critically ,you have to avoid personal biases that cloud your mind.
IDEAS- A 5 STEPS CRITICALTHINKING
GENERAL PROBLEM SOLVING PROCESS
• I- identify problem and set priorities
• D-determine relevant information and deepen
understanding
• E- enumerate options and anticipate consequences
• A- assess the situation and make preliminary decision
• S- scrutinize the process and self correct as needed.
