This document discusses the challenges of characterizing atmospheric aerosols due to their complex multi-dimensional nature, and opportunities for extracting information about sources and transformations from aerosol data. It provides examples of how aerosols can act as indicators of various earth system processes and human perturbations like fires, dust storms, and pollution. There is a need for better integration of emissions, models, and observations to reconcile aerosol data and understand seasonal patterns and long-range transport of different aerosol types.
