Editor's Notes

  • #4: The benefits to universities and students are many: Easy access to open standards-based technologies and supporting resources Ongoing faculty development Increase in student placement Ensure that they have the most current, relevant curricula that map to the kinds of jobs that are expected, so schools can be attractive for enrollment, funding and growth
  • #6: We have worked closely with colleagues in GBS and GTS, S&D, Recruiting, SWG, etc., to identify what we believe are “hot skills” for the IT jobs of tomorrow…and while there are many opportunities for IT graduates, we’re seeing a primary focus on students graduating with knowledge in areas such as SOA, Collaboration tools, IT Service Management, Large Systems Thinking, SSME and so on. This slides represents how each of these skill areas are complemented by IBM’s portfolio of brand offerings. So the benefits we’re providing via the IBM Academic Initiative complement the skill needs referenced here. Example of Rational in action: Architecture Management & Construction Top Products: Eclipse, Rational Application Developer, Rational Software Architect Course Examples: Chongqing University (China) - Rational application Developer Curriculum Jussieu University - (France) J2EE + Rational + WebSphere + Model Driven Development. Using Rational Software Architect 7.0 and WAS 6.1 (Students build a set of Eclipse plugins in micro-projects they run for me : ModelToModel + ModelToText transformations implemented RSA. These plugins mix core Eclipse technologies + the RSA-specific layer.) Quality Management/WebSecurity Top Products: Rational Performance Tester, Rational Functional Tester, Rational AppScan Course Examples: Xi'ian Electronic Science & Technology University (China)-Test Manager and RFT Curriculum University of MO - Rational Appscan NC State-Testing Curriculum on Rational Functional Tester, Rational Performance Tester and Jazz work What is Jazz? Developing software in a team is much like playing an instrument in a band. Both require a balance of collaboration and virtuosity. Jazz defines a vision for the way products can integrate to support this kind of collaborative work, and a technology platform to deliver on this vision. Jazz is an IBM Rational project to build a scalable, extensible team collaboration platform for integrating work across the phases of the development lifecycle. We believe Jazz will help teams build software more effectively while making the software development activity more productive and enjoyable. There will be a mini-conference in San Juan, Puerto Rico late April, early May. This multi-day conference was scheduled in San Juan to attract local developers and to invite the faculty of University of Puerto Rico Mayaguez to see our latest tools and technologies. Following the conference, there will be a visit to the campus, possibly including Ana Martinez, an IBM S&D Territory Director who is PEP exec for UPRM. UPRM now has a robust curriculum offering a number of courses that include Rational and other IBM products. The event scheduled below constitutes 4 Rational events, each repeated over the 2 days to give everyone an opportunity to attend them all. This event was requested by IBM S&D Southeast. Events such as this illustrate how the IBM Rational Technology Events team works to penetrate markets with Rational market messaging while simultaneously leveraging team resources to support the Academic Initiative and our partner universities to achieve the critical goal of seeding the market with IBM skills. Testing San Juan, Puerto Rico 30-Apr-2008 Security San Juan, Puerto Rico 30-Apr-2008 Architecture San Juan, Puerto Rico 30-Apr-2008 Requirements San Juan, Puerto Rico 30-Apr-2008 Security San Juan, Puerto Rico 01-May-2008 Architecture San Juan, Puerto Rico 01-May-2008 Requirements San Juan, Puerto Rico 01-May-2008 Testing San Juan, Puerto Rico 01-May-2008 “ What is SSME”? The service sector is becoming increasingly important throughout the developed world, in terms of both the amount of value added and numbers of employees. However, compared with the manufacturing industry, productivity in the service sector is low, and there have been consistent calls for its improvement. Additionally, the future effects of investment in services and the level of future predictability are also low for the service sector. As a result, both service providers and clients are highly dissatisfied with the current assessment and distribution of value that they feel should be attainable through investment in services. In response to this, a new concept has emerged, centered on IBM’s “service science” (now abbreviated as SSME, for services sciences, management, and engineering). The goal of service science is to increase the productivity of the service industry, promote innovation, and create greater validity and transparency when assessing the value of investments in services. Generally speaking, the service sector is based heavily on the intuition and experience of employees. Service science seeks to take these elements and examine them scientifically, investigating them through the use of existing academic disciplines in order to raise productivity and create visible assessments of investments. An example of such efforts would be improved future predictability of the effects and risks of service investments through the mathematical modeling of business processes, which in turn would lead to improved productivity.
