The University of Zurich faced several challenges in implementing a collaboration solution due to its decentralized structure, diverse user needs, and emphasis on academic freedom. It selected IBM Notes due to its strong client support across diverse operating systems and devices, open standards support, and cost structure well-suited for the university's needs. The university implemented IBM Notes across several clustered servers behind load balancers to provide a transparent, highly available collaboration service for its 40,000 users. It also implemented an IMAP proxy to enable access from non-Notes clients. Overall, IBM Notes met the university's requirements for flexibility, openness, and support for its unique academic environment.
