Virtual User Group DiscussionPresented byTroy LinkerPublisher, ALA Digital ReferenceAmerican Library Association
Online DiscussionWelcome to our first virtual user group meeting. Our goal is for this to be an interactive bidirectional discussion vs. a unidirectional presentation. Your participation is vital to achieving this goal.
Many Ways to ParticipateChat / IMQ&AParticipant audio during the meeting
Ask for the MicThe best way to speak during the session is through head phones combined with a microphone attached to your computer. Click the button labeled "Ask for Mic“ found at the bottom of the Participants box. A number indicating your place in line appears. When it is your turn the moderator will turn on your mic and let you know you have the floor.

Virtual User GroupThe U.S. Test process has been invaluable to us. We did beta testing and other testing, but it wasn’t until users actually tried to use RDA Toolkit in their everyday work that some really useful comments emerged.
Virtual User GroupThe U.S. Test helped us to see that we need a virtual forum to get feedback from everyday users that will help us to set our priorities, to communicate our development plans out to RDA Toolkit users, and to demo recent changes.
Virtual User GroupFormat –webinar format but with smaller groups and more bidirectional communication.Audience – National Libraries and power users in many countries. Open meeting, everyone is invited.Agenda – demo recent release(s), describe plans for next release(s), and brainstorm ideas for future releases.
Virtual User GroupFrequency – to be determined; please answer the post-webinar poll question about frequency.Time zone – offered in rotating time zones so users outside the U.S. also have a chance to participate live (considering three rotating times zones: 9:30 AM CST, 3:30 PM CST, and 8:00 PM CST)

MARC Linking ServiceCreate links based on specific MARC information to the relevant instruction(s) in RDA: Element Set.Links are based on MARC-to-RDA Mappings of RDA Toolkit.Link URLs contain only MARC information so they will not need updating if MARC Mappings change in RDA Toolkit.
MARC VariablesUsers can link to relevant instruction(s) in RDA: Element Set based on:Record Type – either Authority or a Bibliographic recordMARC Field - (e.g., “100”)Indicator - (e.g., “1st” or “2nd”)Subfield – (e.g., $c)

Direct Links to RDA InstructionsIn addition to the MARC links there may be times when users want to simply link to an RDA instruction. To create these links use the following syntax:
Direct Links to RDA InstructionsBegin with the root URL of http://access.rdatoolkit.org/Add the RDA number e.g., for RDA 3.1.4, add the 3.1.4 to the root URL http://access.rdatoolkit.org/3.1.4Finally, add “.html” to the end http://access.rdatoolkit.org/3.1.4.html

Loading Full ChaptersLoading of entire chapters was requested by users during focus groups; they wanted more context in an online environment.Users didn’t like the way AACR2 displayed online in small sections, e.g. 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.Unfortunately the size and complexity of many of the full chapters caused slow loading speeds.
Paging ChaptersWe are testing a solution that breaks each chapter into chapter pages, at the X.X level but not every X.X level. Each chapter will be broken into manageable “pages” or sections based on the size of the particular chapter page. For example Chapter 1 is broken into two pages 1.1 – 1.6 on page one and 1.7 – 1.11 on page two.

Editor's Notes

  • #13: Users asked us to add a book-style index to supplement the RDA Toolkit’s full-text search capability.  This Index is derived from the index used in the RDA Print.  Unlike a full-text search it includes terms that aren’t in RDA, but they are terms a user might try to search when they first come to RDA.  For example General Material Designation [GMD] has an entry that directs users to the RDA concepts of Carrier Type, Content Type, and Media Type.  Like the Table of Contents, the Index is included as a section of RDA, and includes links to the full-text of RDA, a printable PDF for offline use, and is freely available to everyone—no subscription to the RDA Toolkit is needed to view it. The Index is included in the search.
  • #17: Users and the RDA testers told us that a book-style table of contents was useful to help them navigate and learn the structure of RDA and to compare how it differs from the structure of AACR2 and other cataloging standards.  Based on this feedback we converted the RDA Print table of contents into an online section of RDA in the RDA Toolkit.  This new section includes links to sections listed and has a printable PDF for offline use.  In an effort to keep the search results as relevant and uncluttered as possible, the Table of Contents is not included in search. To make it easier for users to learn and experiment with RDA we’re offering this RDA Table of Contents free to everyone—no subscription to the RDA Toolkit is needed to view it.
  • #25: Whether you are creating or revising workflow or procedure documentation, writing a paper for LIS class, or blogging on a specific cataloging issue, direct links to RDA rules will be valuable in communicating your ideas and intentions.
