RDA Toolkit PerformanceImprove response time possibly by not loading entire chapters each time a link is selected. Resolve connectivity issues related to institutional firewalls and network security.
Loading Full ChaptersLoading entire chapter was requested by users during focus groups; they wanted more context in an online environment.Users didn’t like the way AACR2 displayed in small sections 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc.Unfortunately the size and complexity of many of the full chapters caused slow loading speeds.
Paging ChaptersWe are testing a solution that breaks each chapter into chapter pages, at the X.X level but not every X.X level. Each chapter will be broken into manageable sections based on the size of the particular chapter page. For example Chapter 1 is broken into two pages 1.1 – 1.6 on page one and 1.7 – 1.11 on page two.

Recommendations to ALA Publishing2.	Work with JSC to add additional features to RDA Toolkit.
Additional Content & FeaturesDevelop a single search for only “Core” and “Core if” elements. Integrate full examples into RDA Toolkit, including examples for special communities (e.g., serials, rare books, music resources). Provide mapping of RDA elements to other metadata schemes, e.g., MODS, MADS, METS, Dublin Core.

Recommendations to ALA PublishingDevelop mechanism for updating the text of RDA in a timely manner including notification to users as to which chapters/rules have been updated.Include a mechanism for updating the print version.
Recommendations to ALA Publishing4.	Publicize and continue to develop free training on various aspects of RDA Toolkit that were underutilized during the test including RDA: Element Set View and show/hide examples.
Session AgendaU.S. RDA Test AnnouncementVirtual User GroupRecent RDA Toolkit EnhancementsGetting Access to RDA ToolkitQuestions
Virtual User GroupThe U.S. Test process has been invaluable to us. We did beta testing and other testing, but it wasn’t until users actually tried to use RDA Toolkit in their everyday work that some really useful comments emerged.
Virtual User GroupCertainly the U.S. community is very important to us, but the U.S. community is not the only user community of RDA Toolkit. We need a virtual forum to get feedback that helps us set our priorities, to communicate our development plans out to RDA Toolkit users, and to demo recent changes.
Virtual User GroupFormat – webinar format but with smaller groups and more bidirectional communication.Audience – National Libraries and power users in many countries. Open meeting, everyone is invited.Agenda – demo recent release(s), describe plans for next release(s), and brainstorm ideas for future releases.
Virtual User GroupFrequency – to be determined; please answer the post-webinar poll question about frequency.Time zone – offered in rotating time zones so users outside the U.S. also have a chance to participate live (considering three rotating times zones: 9:30 AM CST, 3:30 PM CST, and 8:00 PM CST)

  • 75. Virtual User GroupThe U.S. Test process has been invaluable to us. We did beta testing and other testing, but it wasn’t until users actually tried to use RDA Toolkit in their everyday work that some really useful comments emerged.
  • 76. Virtual User GroupCertainly the U.S. community is very important to us, but the U.S. community is not the only user community of RDA Toolkit. We need a virtual forum to get feedback that helps us set our priorities, to communicate our development plans out to RDA Toolkit users, and to demo recent changes.

Editor's Notes

  • #26: In talking with the Committee co-chairs at ALA’ s Annual conference we discussed the need for more information about some of the requests. We are planning either a call or physical meeting in early August to give ALA Publishing a chance to ask detailed questions about the recommendations. This is an example of a recommendation that needs more explanation.
  • #27: We plan to collect more metadata about each workflow
  • #83: Users asked us to add a book-style index to supplement the RDA Toolkit’s full-text search capability.  This Index is derived from the index used in the RDA Print.  Unlike a full-text search it includes terms that aren’t in RDA, but they are terms a user might try to search when they first come to RDA.  For example General Material Designation [GMD] has an entry that directs users to the RDA concepts of Carrier Type, Content Type, and Media Type.  Like the Table of Contents, the Index is included as a section of RDA, and includes links to the full-text of RDA, a printable PDF for offline use, and is freely available to everyone—no subscription to the RDA Toolkit is needed to view it. The Index is included in the search.
  • #87: Users and the RDA testers told us that a book-style table of contents was useful to help them navigate and learn the structure of RDA and to compare how it differs from the structure of AACR2 and other cataloging standards.  Based on this feedback we converted the RDA Print table of contents into an online section of RDA in the RDA Toolkit.  This new section includes links to sections listed and has a printable PDF for offline use.  In an effort to keep the search results as relevant and uncluttered as possible, the Table of Contents is not included in search. To make it easier for users to learn and experiment with RDA we’re offering this RDA Table of Contents free to everyone—no subscription to the RDA Toolkit is needed to view it.
  • #95: Whether you are creating or revising workflow or procedure documentation, writing a paper for LIS class, or blogging on a specific cataloging issue, direct links to RDA rules will be valuable in communicating your ideas and intentions.
  • #103: Will you be leading an RDA workshop or presentation sometime soon? If so we’d like to help make your instruction stick. We are happy to offer the RDA Post-Event Access, a free, 30-day trial that will provide solo-user access to anyone attending an RDA Toolkit training event. We believe this added access will allow those who are new to RDA to apply what they have learned in your training and to become even more familiar and comfortable with RDA Toolkit. To guarantee that this offer is available at your event, simply email us at rdatoolkit@ala.org and tell us about your event. When and where will it be held? What sort of event is it? An inhouse training session or a public workshop? Is it free or paid? How many attendees do you anticipate? After reviewing your email, we will send you a PDF containing a special code tied to your event and instructions for obtaining the free solo-user access. The PDF can be printed out or emailed to participants. Please make a new request for each new event, workshop, or presentation.
  • #111: Thank you for joining us.
