Place Of Question
By Whitney Henderson Reilly
I recorded my place in question
by taking pictures in different
areas as my location was at a wide
area of the college. There was so
many variety of things to focus
on and develop. Lighting was
important because when looking
at certain objects you can see
them in different ways as they
could brighten up or cause
shadows to appear to give the
object more of affect. I focused
on different objects that consist
with different shapes so it could
look more unique.

b use of materials,

or a combination of
materials, processes and
technology to develop
ideas
What did you learn through
your initial enquiries?
Experiments and techniques,
use of an experimental
process to generate new ideas,
suitability of some rather than
others?
I learned that when using different medias
things look different then they originally look.
Also drawing the different objects like the
wood sculpture and fence they are similar in a
way even though I didn’t use the same material
they remind me of both wood.
When I first was using sketch up I had
no idea what I was doing. I have never
used this software before and I had to
make sure that I understood how each
tool works before I do what I chosen to
do as my inspiration for my 3D model
and brief. When I did my sketch model
and wanted it to look like the original
object that I was looking at. So I made
sure it is the same measurements, tried to
make the colours similar and the look of
the wooden sculpture. As you can see
that the middle panel of wood is the
lightest as the object I was looking at it
was the lighter colour as im guessing it
doesn’t get a lot of rain it so it doesn’t
make it turn darker.

SketchUp and
Movie
Adobe premiere pro is where I created the movie of my
sketch up model and images, I found it difficult at first
cause I had no clue what things were. Effect control is
one of the tools that I knew so I understood what to do
with that as it is something that I used in a different
software.
I recorded my place in question by taking pictures in different areas
as my location was at a wide area of the college. There was so many
variety of things to focus on and develop. Lighting was important
because when looking at certain objects you can see them in different
ways as they could brighten up or cause shadows to appear to give
the object more of affect. I focused on different objects that consist
with different shapes so it could look more unique.
When doing my initial ideas I used a variety of different media to see
what works well with each other. The large drawing was my starting
point. That’s how I came up with incorporating the leaves with the
wooden object. Using different media gave the large drawing more of
a better look, meaning that it doesn’t look boring because it isn’t just
using one media. It has many. I wanted to use tone to give it more
depth to the drawing. I first made a 3D model out of cardboard and
it wasn’t really that good but it had all the shapes of the object I was
looking at. I then went into the work shop to create a replica of the
wooden sculpture. I put a frame in it as I wanted to make it look
different and also I wanted to include leaves. As I wanted a bit of
nature involved in my model. I cut out the negative space because
you can clearly see through it and I found it different then having
tracing paper and brown paper showing.
Making and
developmental
work - (Large
drawing, 3D,
print)
Using
historical and
contemporary
research
When looking at other peoples work
it makes me question what art really
is. Art is such a wide range thing.
Artists all have their different styles
and I have my own, but seeing the
artists that I researched made think
about the way I approach things in
my book and in how interpret things.
I mean that they have made me seen
different angles in art, I don’t just do
my own style I try and incorporate
other artists work within my own.
When looking at other artists work I
make sure that I write what I think
about their work. I like to go in detail
as I have so much to say about the
different artists that I looked at. I
find it very useful to look at others
work then you get more inspired and
have much more new knowledge to
share in your sketchbook, well that’s
how I see it.
When looking at art works I make
sure that I comment on tone, line,
colour all of those visual language. It
is very important that I understand
why artists do what they do. Such as
the colour that use is important they
don’t want to use the wrong colours
in their piece of work or it will be
ruined. Each colour has a meaning if
you really think about it and that is
one thing I have learned not all artists
have the same meanings when they
use the same colour as they all
produce different artworks.
Developing your
personal briefa) My brief was that I was making a piece of furniture which incorporates nature. I created
different initial ideas of chairs that have nature inspired designs. Before I thought my brief I
did research on artists that do art by making furniture and I found two artists: Spencer
Jenkins and John Makepeace. These two artists had very different approaches with their
furniture. I really liked how Makepeace did a design of branches in the chair and that
inspired me to create some initial ideas based on putting nature in a chair as I found that
very unique. As I wanted to create a furniture that has leaves within it. That was my starting
point. I knew that by brief will be around nature and mostly leaves. Also I had the idea of
leaves from my 3D model as that incorporated leaves on it.
b) I came to my final decision on what design to go to as I really liked the shape of chair as I
found it very unique with how the legs aren’t straight, but slanted and on each leg there are
leaves engraved to make it look different from other chairs as they don’t usually have
designs on the legs but the one I have designed does. Where you sit down there would be a
big leaf in the middle and it look like a realistic leaf, this will also be engraved like the design
on the legs. I wanted it to be really different and that’s why I was inspired by Makepeace for
the branches on the backrest. People want chairs that bright up a room and that’s what I
tried to portray in my final design. Yes they did work effectively because it came out how my
client wanted it.
Developing your
personal brief
a) I was trying to keep with the theme of the place of question as my object was a
wooden sculpture and I found the shapes very intriguing. As the object looks
like a chair shape but you can not sit on it. So that’s how I started to develop
my brief. I developed my brief by seeing what company I can put down that
makes sense for my brief. The decisions I have made to refine my ideas is that I
have to narrow my ideas down and make sure that the material I use its
appropriate for my client and for the company that I have for my brief.
b) When planning my final product I have to check that the materials that I am
using I have enough of it all. Also the design of my product has to be in a clear
layout so I know what I am doing, measurements, colours and designs have to
be correct I would not like a mistake on my final design as I wouldn’t want to
make a mistake when making it. Making a very detailed chair was the best
approach as I want the chair to bring out a room and make people want to buy
it as it would be very eye catching maybe not in the colour but the leaf design
will be very fine and realistic. Wood was definitely the best option to use (oak)
as it is very easy to work with the shaping and design. The leaves will be
engraved so that its actually in the wood ad not painted on. The back of the
seat will be a shape of a tree for the resembles the tree it came from.
b)
Unit 11 Develop & Produce
Own Ideas
a) Create and develop ideas in
response to the brief.
How did you interpret your
brief? What different
approaches to the same theme
did you explore? What
decisions did you make to
refine your ideas?
b) Plan and produce final
outcome using specialist
working methods and
processes.
How did you decide on the
final outcome? Why was this
the best approach? How did
you choose the techniques
you’ve used? Did they work
effectively?
Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
Applying
Professional;
practice in your work • As I wanted to look at an artist that is a sculpture and that’s uses wood to
create their artwork. Lasserre’s drawings and sculptures explore the unexpected
potential of the everyday through allegories of value, expectation, and utility.
• b) It helped me design more of my of my initial ideas as I was very inspired by
Lasserre’s work. It was very unique. Not only did Lasserre did sculpture work
he did drawings which made me approach my drawings different and made me
think more about the uniqueness of my designs and make them my own and
not follow what someone else had created in their work.
• c) Health and safety was very important for making a chair this is because
making it has a lot of machinery involved. So gloves and goggles should always
be worn when producing my final outcome. Always be aware of your
surroundings as when making/producing the product as if you bump into
someone you can injure them if you are using a machine.
Unit 8
Personal, Portfolio
Development &
Progression In my sketch book I laid out all my work in a clear way so it will make the examiner or any
other people can understand what I have done. Sometimes I added boarders round my
work to make things look secure and not messy. I haven’t used any presentation boards to
make any of my work stand out. My sketch book has a lot of information on what I have
done on each page so that the examiner will understand what I have been looking at.
• My personal presentation of my book is good as I presented each part in order so
nothing looks out of place within my book.
• The written communications within the whole of book is really good cause I made
sure that who ever is reading/looking at what I have done they will understand fully
what is going through out my whole sketchbook. My writing is clear and shows the
stages of what I was thinking at the time I was drawing or researching.
evaluation
Overall this project has gone due to that I have made sure that each page there is annotations so that everyone can understand my
thinking and why I did the drawings, research, sketch up, movie, 3d model and many more. This is one of the projects that I really
got stuck into, because it was different as I could pick anything in my place of question and develop it. I found it fun to create my
3D model. Doing research about different artists and their styles really got me inspired because it made me want to use some of
their style within my own work in my sketch book. Also I used different skills and learned new ones too. Such as mono printing is
something I haven’t done very much and now I can say that I know how to use the ink, press and how to create a image out of
plastic; it was fun. Also working in the work shop made me more confident with my self that I create a good stable 3D model. At
first I was very fast doing all the drawings of my place of question and making sure that all of my work is in the right order in my
book as I need to take time on the each page of my book. However, trying to think of my brief was difficult at first as there was so
many options for me to choose from and it was difficult trying to pick the right one. The only thing that went wrong was how long
I took to make a decision for the brief.
