What did you learn through
your initial enquiries?
Experiments and techniques,
use of an experimental process
to generate new ideas,
suitability of some rather than
others?

I used many different approaches to examine and record my area for example I took
photographs, completed observational drawings and took measurements. I took
measurements of most of the objects in my area for example the dimensions of the bin,
the dimensions of the shed, signs and copper rods. I used a measuring tape to do this as it
was the easiest way, however this was quite tricky when measuring the length of the shed
as the measuring tape was too short. I completed these measurements to develop my
intentions of creating a to scale model of my area in Google SketchUp. I think the
measurements exercise and approach of recordingmy area has been the most successful
as it enabled me to create an effective SketchUp model which I then created a film with
showing the different angles and also how the shadow changes over time. With my
Google SketchUp I also created a video which combined different elements of my project.
I took many photographs of my area which I could use as a reference throughput the
project. At first I did not like my area, I thought it was very bland and boring as there were
not many interesting components within the space that fascinated me. When I started
looking closely at the different shapes, textures and tone, the area grew on me. I took
initial photographs for reference throughout the project.
During my initial enquiries
about my area I learnt that
simple objects that look boring
could actually turn out to look
interesting, for example the bin
I drew initially which is very
boring actually turned out to
make a great drawing. I added
in mark making techniques to
make my area look more
appealing.

To further develop my knowledge of my area and computer
programmes used in the professional industry, I created my area using
Google SketchUp. Initially I found this very challenging as I had only ever
used the programme once. I had to play around a bit, trying out
different tools and experimenting with them before I got the hang of it.
When I knew what most of the tools did, I enjoyed making my area using
SketchUp as you that to concentrate and think carefully where the
different components in your area are placed, and also the size and
proportion is very important. I found making the roof’s of the two
building the most challenging aspect of using Google SketchUp as you
had to use a range of different tools to get the right shape and
perspective. I used the 3D Warehouse to get some of the objects, for
example the bin and trees as they were extremely hard to make for a
beginner. I found tutorials online very useful as they are easy to follow.
I then went on to make a video of my SketchUp Model of my area. I
made one showing my area and everything I did in Google SketchUp and
also out of my interest I also made a video showing how the shadows
change within my area over time.
I have made a video of various different aspects of my The Place In Question project, this includes
my SketchUp model, my sculpture filmed outside in my area and my sculpture filmed inside in a
small studio using light. To create this video I used Adobe Premiere, at first I found this quite
challenging as I had never used the programme before, however I used a couple of Youtube videos
on tutorials and this made the process a lot easier. I think my video is successful as I was able to
add text, sound and transitions which were all new to me. This is a great way of developing
multimedia ideas by combining the use of technology processes as I used Google SketchUp as a
base of this video which was different to using Adobe Premiere to put this video together. I
believe that the video is a great addition to my The Place In Question project as it concludes my
area in an interesting and engaging video which is suitable for all ages.

Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
I used various different ways to examine and record my location including a large
mixed media study, a 3D sculpture and a print (dry point printing). I wanted to
create a mixed media piece as I enjoyed creating them but also to reflect the variety
of different components in my area. I created an abstract piece of work on an A2
piece of paper using a range of different medias and materials to make it interesting
and effective in the way that I want it to grab you attention. I used existing work in
my sketchbook to create a new piece of work which is bigger than usual. I used
aspects of my area which interested me the most, the shed and the wide variety of
foliage in my area. I was very happy with this piece of work as it was out of my
comfort zone and really pushed me. If I were to improve this mixed media piece I
would either get rid of or fix/improve the ink printings of the leaves in the top right
hand corner as I don’t think they completely fit into the study. I only represented a
selected space in my area which interested me the most.
I made a sculpture to represent my area. I used a
range of different materials, processes and a
combination of technology to create my sculpture.
The materials I used includes clear perspex, beads,
fishing line and small logs and twigs. I had to drill into
the perspex and the logs using a pillar drill which I had
used before however I had never used the band facer
before which I used to smooth the sides of the
perspex down, this was a new skill I learnt while
making my sculpture. The process running up to the
making of my sculpture included many different
experiments which were developed through
generating ideas which were improved each time.

Contextual References
Research into historical
and contemporary work,
showing understanding of
the contexts which
influenced the work.
What have you learned about
the influences on other’s
work?
Recording and presenting
information explaining the
use of visual language in
others’ work.
Where have you analysed
examples? What did you
learn?
Use of contextual
references in own work.
How have you used
references? What impact did
they have on your ideas?
Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
I used Colour Perspective to represent my area as there is a lot of depth within my space which
include many shades and tones of colours. I used acrylic paint to create this piece of work as it is
relatively easy to use in the way that it is not too thick and quite simple to mix your own colours
with. I used a range of different sized square paintbrushes to get a contrast in sizes between the
colours, this was also due to the face that some areas of colour were smaller than others for
example the yellow and orange. I used darker and much more dull colours in the background
which represented the forest area which was very dark, included many shadows and dark tones
of green, brown and some areas even black. The foreground included many more bold and
vibrant colours as there was more light present. This painting is a success as it represents my
area with a range of different colours symbolizing depth of field. This piece of work was
influenced by Nicolas De Stael who is a French painter of Russian origin known for this thick use
of paint in landscape paintings. Using this as a reference hugely impacted my work in the way
that for my final outcome, I experimented using colour perspective in my area.
I researched into a print maker called Huc-Mazelet Luquiens who was
an American printmaker, painter and art educator. The visual language
he uses in his work is very interesting in the way that he uses many
marks to create an image which is appealing to look at. The mark
making techniques he uses include cross-hatching, dots, lines and
dashes, all of these put together have created the image which I have
studied to the right. The range of marks communicate a detailed and
precise piece of work which focuses on texture and tone. These formal
elements make the print interesting to look at as there is many
different components for the eye to focus and take in. There is also
tone present in the print which communicates the fact that there are
different colours present, light and dark. This makes the tree look more
three dimensional and realistic. I have learnt that mark-making
techniques make works look much more aesthetically pleasing.
Unit 13 (Design)
Resolve the needs of the
brief to develop
intentions.
How did you develop the
final brief? What client / end
user is it for? Why?
What constraints and
requirements did you
consider?
What research did you
undertake into your chosen
area of creative enquiry?
Develop a range of ideas
in response to the brief.
How did you develop your
ideas for the final outcome?
What techniques did you use
to generate ideas? What
influenced you in doing this?
Developing your
Personal Brief:
Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
I gave myself the brief of ‘Commissioned by The National trust (n
environmentally friendly organisation) to design a poster to promote
the vulnerability of the environment and how it should be looked
after.’ because I thought that would be well suited to my area bearing in
mind it includes a building and a wide variety of vegetation which are
both present in most National Trust areas. The Trust describes itself as
"a charity that works to preserve and protect historic places and spaces
— for ever, for everyone. The trust owns many heritage properties,
including historic houses and gardens, industrial monuments and social
history sites. The historical property could be seen as the shed in my
area and the gardens could be seen as the vegetation in my area.
I had to make sure that my poster was not offensive in any way as it
should be suitable for all ages as The National Trust has places which are
attractions for children as they have play parks and gardens to see. I had
to make sure that my poster was lined to the environment as that is
what the poster is promoting. I researched into what the National Trust
does and why they do it, this helped me understand the organisation
and helped me in creating a poster for them.
To develop a range of ideas in response to my brief, I researched into 3
artists which I was interested in and whom could influence my work. I
then experimented using my area and the artists way of working. I
created five experiments influenced by Nicolas De Stael, Patrick Bremer
and Friedrich Vordemberge-Gidewart. I then completed six different
small sketches as initial drawings, chose my favourite and developed it,
experimenting with size and shapes.
Unit 11 Develop &
Produce Own Ideas
Create and develop ideas in
response to the brief.
How did you interpret your
brief? What different
approaches to the same
theme did you explore?
What decisions did you
make to refine your ideas?
Plan and produce final
outcome using specialist
working methods and
processes.
How did you decide on the
final outcome? Why was
this the best approach?
How did you choose the
techniques you’ve used?
Did they work effectively?
Developing your
Personal Brief:
Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
I developed ideas in response to my brief after getting to know my area well and looking
at a range of different artists who worked differently to gather information which could
influence my work. I interpreted my brief in the way that I wanted the poster to have an
abstract feel as it is unusual for an environmental poster, however in my opinion I think
that it would make it suitable for a wide range of people. I explored many ways in which
I could represent my area using colour perspective, I looked at creating my own textures,
block colours within my area, the key shapes within my area and the colours. I then came up with an initial design which I was happy with. From this initial
design I experimented in changing the shapes I used, changing the sizes of the shapes and inserting text. I explored this using the same theme of colours,
different tones of green and brown. To refine my ideas I experimented in this way to see which design looked the best and which design would be suitable
for a poster, I took into consideration that text and logos needed to be added which I needed to leave space for.
I decide on a final outcome after
experimenting with layout, fonts and different
designs. I chose a font on the basis that it
needed to be easy to read for all ages, therefor
I chose a simple font. I think this was the best
approach as I could see for myself which design
worked best and why. I chose the technique of
painting with inks as I enjoyed it and the marks
it made were exciting in the way that all of
the shapes are different. The colours are also very vibrant and well suited for a poster as
they are bold and eye-catching. I chose to put my designs together in Photoshop as I was
bale to use the programme and in my opinion it was the easiest way to create a poster
using text and images. These two techniques worked well together as I was able to
transfer my painting to the computer easily.
Applying
Professional Practice
in your work:
Unit 10
Professional Practice:
Investigate and analyse
professional practice.
Where have you looked at the
working methods and
approaches of others in this
project?
Apply and develop
professional practice in own
work.
How did you adopt an
approach from researching the
above?
Investigate and apply health
and safety and legal
requirements.
What health & safety risks
have you avoided? How?
Appropriate standards of
professional working approach.
How did you refine and present
your work to a professional
standard?
Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria.
I created sheets of my own colours and
textures that symbolized the colours and
textures in my area. I mixed my won colours
as it made the work more personal and
original. I then cut out each of the colours
separately and cut them into the shapes which
I needed in my collage. I created this collage
with Patrick Bremer in mind as his collages are
made out of individual shapes which when put
together make an image. I tried to create tone
within my collage by using darker greens and
blues where there was a darker tone. I think
this collage has been successful as it clearly
illustrates my area with the colours, tones and
shapes.. The colours relate back to the subject
matter of the environment for example green
which is colour of vegetation and grass, brown
which is the colour of dirt and the ground,
blue which is the colour of the sky and sea and
finally orange which is the colour of the sun
and some flowers. I had to use scissors
carefully cutting away from myself to avoid
any health and safety problems.
As I would like to work in the
Graphics Industry when I am
older, I thought I would study
an artist who I am inspired by to
create my own work. I chose
Paul Catherall because in my
opinion his work is very simple
but effective. I created a copy of
his work of the OXO Tower on
London’s Southbank as the
colours are striking and create a
bold effect. I used acrylic paint
to create my study as in my
opinion it was the easiest
medium to paint block colours
in. I enjoyed painting this as the
concentration to get the colours
the correct colour and the lines
straight was entertaining, ay
times also frustrating for
example getting the right grey.
I have researched into Marianne
Stenburg because I liked the
simple use of medias, fineliner.
The textures created with
fineliner are interesting and look
realistic. I applied this into my
work as I did a piece of work in
the style of Stenburg where I
used the feather like pattern for
the leaves within my area.
Marianne also draws buildings
coming off lines which I also
recreated using the shed in my
area. I presented my work to a
professional standard in the way
that I typed up my annotations
which look neat and aesthetic. I
also tried to present my work in
an interesting way which is
appealing to look at for example
I have added a border of ripped
paper which gives a grimy effect
to the black and white fineliner
study.
Another artist I studied in
the project is Will Lindley,
he illustrates under the
name of ‘Building
Illustrations’. For the study
I completed below, I used
permanent marker and
drew onto acetate as I
thought it would look
aesthetically pleasing and
it I unique and something I
have never done before. I
had to take into
consideration health and
safety procedures as I used
a scalpel. I had to use a
safety rule (metal), cutting
mat and cut away from me
to avoid any injury.
Unit 8
Personal,
Portfolio
Development &
Progression:
Personal presentation
and communication
skills.
Portfolio presentation
techniques.
How have you presented
your work?
Did you make particular
use of photography or
presentation boards?
How have you considered
clarity of information in
your sketchbooks and
boards?
Identifying and
pursuing progression
goals
What evidence do you
have of research into
progression? Photos of
open days, website
research? What have you
learned so far?
So far, I have visited two open days, UAL:
Chelsea and Arts Uni Bournemouth. I have
discovered that I would definitely like to do
a Graphic Design degree because it
interests me greatly and I have a passion to
develop my knowledge in this field. Out of
these two Uni’s I preferred Bournemouth
as the atmosphere was welcoming and the
course looked like something I would want
to complete. I have booked other open
days which I ma going to attend as well, for
example Camberwell, Wimbledon and
Kinsgton.
I have presented my work in various different
ways including in a sketchbook, on my blog
and on presentation boards. I have taken
photographs to present my final sculpture
because it showed them in an aesthetic way
and the photos portrayed the texture, colour,
and showcased the interesting shadows
which were casted when put under a light. I
used presentation boards to present my
sculpture as well as then it could be shown
to a wider audience. I have also used
presentation boards to present my final
poster commissioned by The National Trust
as it looks neat, professional and clearly
illustrates what the poster would look like
big scale. The presentation boards are easy
to understand and aesthetic to look at.
I have used a tumblr blog to
present my all of my work because
it is an easy virtual way of people
navigating around my portfolio. I
have included images of my work
on the blog and explained them.
On my blog I have also put the
artist that inspired me and the
Professional Practice Case Studies.
Opinion and Evaluation:
Opinion: When I pulled the image of my area out of the box, I’m going to be honest, I was disappointed as I thought that my area was very boring and did not include many objects which
were interesting to me to draw or even look at. However when I got into it and started to get to know my area, it quickly grew on me die to the different textures present in my area. The
range of different shapes an objects in my area also make it more enjoyable than I originally thought. Through experimenting and recording my area in different ways, I have developed a
wide variety of different ways you can make a boring area look appealing for example the textures in wood, the different tones present in my area and also the shadows produced.
Evaluation:
Time Management – The Place In Question project involved a lot of time management, as there was not enough time in lessons to complete all the work, I had to continue working and
experimenting with different medias and techniques at home. There were aspects of the project I could not complete at home for example the dry-point printing which had to be done in
college due to the lack of tools at home. I think I managed my time very well as I was able to complete all the work before the deadline.
Research - I had to research into various different aspects while completing The Place In Question project. I researched into a variety of different artists including Ola Liola, Nicolas De Stael,
Building Illustrations and Paul Catheral, completing this research enabled me to build up knowledge about how different artists work and the way they work, I also found it interesting why
the artists use the medias they do. I decided to research these artists because their work stood out to me and interested me. Researching these artists also provided me with the inspiration
and drive to complete my own work in the style of theirs.
Development - The Place In Question project included many stages, which involved me in developing my ideas and taking them further for example the A2 study of my area which started out
as four small compositions in my sketchbook to the 3D sculpture and finally the final outcome which was a leaflet for That National Trust promoting the vulnerability of the environment and
how it needs to be looked after. In my opinion I developed my ideas to the best of my ability as I experimented with ideas a lot, especially for my final outcome where I played around with
different shapes and sizes to see which one worked the best and which was was the most well suited to the final outcome of a poster. In my opinion I could have developed my A2 study
more as I went straight from 4 small compositions into a huge piece of work which I was not used to. I could have increased the size before going large. I could have done mini versions to
see if it would work well before completing the big final study which actually I was very happy with as I went out of my comfort zone and used spurts of colour. Experimenting more could
have influenced the final design.
Final Outcomes - The Place in Question project led me to having two different final outcomes, the 3D sculpture developed from my area and also the poster commissioned for The National
Trust to promote the vulnerability of the environment.
If I was given a chance to repeat the project again, I could possibly create my own font to be used on the final
poster which would make it more well suited to the subject area and also make the poster more personal. I think
this would have made a great edition to my project as it would have shown the variety in my skills. I would also
maybe design my own logo for The National Trust. Making different variations of the poster would also make a
great edition to my project as it would mean there would be a range of different posters which would work
together to persuade people to look after the environment.
During the course of this project I have learnt how to Dry-Point Print which I found very engaging due to the fact
that I had never done it before and I liked the process. I was also very happy with my final outcomes.

During my initial enquiries about my area I learnt that simple objects that look boring could actually turn out to look interesting, for example the bin I drew initially which is very boring actually turned out to make a great drawing. I added in mark making techniques to make my area look more appealing.
  • 3. Location Studies: SketchUp and Movie Multimedia Developing multimedia ideas by combining the use of technology processes. Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria. To further develop my knowledge of my area and computer programmes used in the professional industry, I created my area using Google SketchUp. Initially I found this very challenging as I had only ever used the programme once. I had to play around a bit, trying out different tools and experimenting with them before I got the hang of it. When I knew what most of the tools did, I enjoyed making my area using SketchUp as you that to concentrate and think carefully where the different components in your area are placed, and also the size and proportion is very important. I found making the roof’s of the two building the most challenging aspect of using Google SketchUp as you had to use a range of different tools to get the right shape and perspective. I used the 3D Warehouse to get some of the objects, for example the bin and trees as they were extremely hard to make for a beginner. I found tutorials online very useful as they are easy to follow. I then went on to make a video of my SketchUp Model of my area. I made one showing my area and everything I did in Google SketchUp and also out of my interest I also made a video showing how the shadows change within my area over time. I have made a video of various different aspects of my The Place In Question project, this includes my SketchUp model, my sculpture filmed outside in my area and my sculpture filmed inside in a small studio using light. To create this video I used Adobe Premiere, at first I found this quite challenging as I had never used the programme before, however I used a couple of Youtube videos on tutorials and this made the process a lot easier. I think my video is successful as I was able to add text, sound and transitions which were all new to me. This is a great way of developing multimedia ideas by combining the use of technology processes as I used Google SketchUp as a base of this video which was different to using Adobe Premiere to put this video together. I believe that the video is a great addition to my The Place In Question project as it concludes my area in an interesting and engaging video which is suitable for all ages.
  • 4. Making and Developmental Work: (Large drawing, 3D, print) Unit 12 (Fine Art) Recording of experiences or information to develop intentions. What approaches did you use to examine and record your location? Representing the space; details; light etc. How did you decide and which worked the best? Why? Use of materials, processes and technology or a combination of materials, processes and technology to develop ideas. What did you learn through your initial enquiries? Experiments and techniques, use of an experimental process to generate new ideas, suitability of some rather than others? Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria. I used various different ways to examine and record my location including a large mixed media study, a 3D sculpture and a print (dry point printing). I wanted to create a mixed media piece as I enjoyed creating them but also to reflect the variety of different components in my area. I created an abstract piece of work on an A2 piece of paper using a range of different medias and materials to make it interesting and effective in the way that I want it to grab you attention. I used existing work in my sketchbook to create a new piece of work which is bigger than usual. I used aspects of my area which interested me the most, the shed and the wide variety of foliage in my area. I was very happy with this piece of work as it was out of my comfort zone and really pushed me. If I were to improve this mixed media piece I would either get rid of or fix/improve the ink printings of the leaves in the top right hand corner as I don’t think they completely fit into the study. I only represented a selected space in my area which interested me the most. I made a sculpture to represent my area. I used a range of different materials, processes and a combination of technology to create my sculpture. The materials I used includes clear perspex, beads, fishing line and small logs and twigs. I had to drill into the perspex and the logs using a pillar drill which I had used before however I had never used the band facer before which I used to smooth the sides of the perspex down, this was a new skill I learnt while making my sculpture. The process running up to the making of my sculpture included many different experiments which were developed through generating ideas which were improved each time.
  • 5. Using Historical and Contemporary Research: Unit 9 Contextual References Research into historical and contemporary work, showing understanding of the contexts which influenced the work. What have you learned about the influences on other’s work? Recording and presenting information explaining the use of visual language in others’ work. Where have you analysed examples? What did you learn? Use of contextual references in own work. How have you used references? What impact did they have on your ideas? Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria. I used Colour Perspective to represent my area as there is a lot of depth within my space which include many shades and tones of colours. I used acrylic paint to create this piece of work as it is relatively easy to use in the way that it is not too thick and quite simple to mix your own colours with. I used a range of different sized square paintbrushes to get a contrast in sizes between the colours, this was also due to the face that some areas of colour were smaller than others for example the yellow and orange. I used darker and much more dull colours in the background which represented the forest area which was very dark, included many shadows and dark tones of green, brown and some areas even black. The foreground included many more bold and vibrant colours as there was more light present. This painting is a success as it represents my area with a range of different colours symbolizing depth of field. This piece of work was influenced by Nicolas De Stael who is a French painter of Russian origin known for this thick use of paint in landscape paintings. Using this as a reference hugely impacted my work in the way that for my final outcome, I experimented using colour perspective in my area. I researched into a print maker called Huc-Mazelet Luquiens who was an American printmaker, painter and art educator. The visual language he uses in his work is very interesting in the way that he uses many marks to create an image which is appealing to look at. The mark making techniques he uses include cross-hatching, dots, lines and dashes, all of these put together have created the image which I have studied to the right. The range of marks communicate a detailed and precise piece of work which focuses on texture and tone. These formal elements make the print interesting to look at as there is many different components for the eye to focus and take in. There is also tone present in the print which communicates the fact that there are different colours present, light and dark. This makes the tree look more three dimensional and realistic. I have learnt that mark-making techniques make works look much more aesthetically pleasing.
  • 6. Unit 13 (Design) Resolve the needs of the brief to develop intentions. How did you develop the final brief? What client / end user is it for? Why? What constraints and requirements did you consider? What research did you undertake into your chosen area of creative enquiry? Develop a range of ideas in response to the brief. How did you develop your ideas for the final outcome? What techniques did you use to generate ideas? What influenced you in doing this? Developing your Personal Brief: Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria. I gave myself the brief of ‘Commissioned by The National trust (n environmentally friendly organisation) to design a poster to promote the vulnerability of the environment and how it should be looked after.’ because I thought that would be well suited to my area bearing in mind it includes a building and a wide variety of vegetation which are both present in most National Trust areas. The Trust describes itself as "a charity that works to preserve and protect historic places and spaces — for ever, for everyone. The trust owns many heritage properties, including historic houses and gardens, industrial monuments and social history sites. The historical property could be seen as the shed in my area and the gardens could be seen as the vegetation in my area. I had to make sure that my poster was not offensive in any way as it should be suitable for all ages as The National Trust has places which are attractions for children as they have play parks and gardens to see. I had to make sure that my poster was lined to the environment as that is what the poster is promoting. I researched into what the National Trust does and why they do it, this helped me understand the organisation and helped me in creating a poster for them. To develop a range of ideas in response to my brief, I researched into 3 artists which I was interested in and whom could influence my work. I then experimented using my area and the artists way of working. I created five experiments influenced by Nicolas De Stael, Patrick Bremer and Friedrich Vordemberge-Gidewart. I then completed six different small sketches as initial drawings, chose my favourite and developed it, experimenting with size and shapes.
  • 7. Unit 11 Develop & Produce Own Ideas Create and develop ideas in response to the brief. How did you interpret your brief? What different approaches to the same theme did you explore? What decisions did you make to refine your ideas? Plan and produce final outcome using specialist working methods and processes. How did you decide on the final outcome? Why was this the best approach? How did you choose the techniques you’ve used? Did they work effectively? Developing your Personal Brief: Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria. I developed ideas in response to my brief after getting to know my area well and looking at a range of different artists who worked differently to gather information which could influence my work. I interpreted my brief in the way that I wanted the poster to have an abstract feel as it is unusual for an environmental poster, however in my opinion I think that it would make it suitable for a wide range of people. I explored many ways in which I could represent my area using colour perspective, I looked at creating my own textures, block colours within my area, the key shapes within my area and the colours. I then came up with an initial design which I was happy with. From this initial design I experimented in changing the shapes I used, changing the sizes of the shapes and inserting text. I explored this using the same theme of colours, different tones of green and brown. To refine my ideas I experimented in this way to see which design looked the best and which design would be suitable for a poster, I took into consideration that text and logos needed to be added which I needed to leave space for. I decide on a final outcome after experimenting with layout, fonts and different designs. I chose a font on the basis that it needed to be easy to read for all ages, therefor I chose a simple font. I think this was the best approach as I could see for myself which design worked best and why. I chose the technique of painting with inks as I enjoyed it and the marks it made were exciting in the way that all of the shapes are different. The colours are also very vibrant and well suited for a poster as they are bold and eye-catching. I chose to put my designs together in Photoshop as I was bale to use the programme and in my opinion it was the easiest way to create a poster using text and images. These two techniques worked well together as I was able to transfer my painting to the computer easily.
  • 8. Applying Professional Practice in your work: Unit 10 Professional Practice: Investigate and analyse professional practice. Where have you looked at the working methods and approaches of others in this project? Apply and develop professional practice in own work. How did you adopt an approach from researching the above? Investigate and apply health and safety and legal requirements. What health & safety risks have you avoided? How? Appropriate standards of professional working approach. How did you refine and present your work to a professional standard? Illustrate (photo’s from sketchbook) and fully explain one example for each criteria. Explain how you have covered the criteria. I created sheets of my own colours and textures that symbolized the colours and textures in my area. I mixed my won colours as it made the work more personal and original. I then cut out each of the colours separately and cut them into the shapes which I needed in my collage. I created this collage with Patrick Bremer in mind as his collages are made out of individual shapes which when put together make an image. I tried to create tone within my collage by using darker greens and blues where there was a darker tone. I think this collage has been successful as it clearly illustrates my area with the colours, tones and shapes.. The colours relate back to the subject matter of the environment for example green which is colour of vegetation and grass, brown which is the colour of dirt and the ground, blue which is the colour of the sky and sea and finally orange which is the colour of the sun and some flowers. I had to use scissors carefully cutting away from myself to avoid any health and safety problems. As I would like to work in the Graphics Industry when I am older, I thought I would study an artist who I am inspired by to create my own work. I chose Paul Catherall because in my opinion his work is very simple but effective. I created a copy of his work of the OXO Tower on London’s Southbank as the colours are striking and create a bold effect. I used acrylic paint to create my study as in my opinion it was the easiest medium to paint block colours in. I enjoyed painting this as the concentration to get the colours the correct colour and the lines straight was entertaining, ay times also frustrating for example getting the right grey. I have researched into Marianne Stenburg because I liked the simple use of medias, fineliner. The textures created with fineliner are interesting and look realistic. I applied this into my work as I did a piece of work in the style of Stenburg where I used the feather like pattern for the leaves within my area. Marianne also draws buildings coming off lines which I also recreated using the shed in my area. I presented my work to a professional standard in the way that I typed up my annotations which look neat and aesthetic. I also tried to present my work in an interesting way which is appealing to look at for example I have added a border of ripped paper which gives a grimy effect to the black and white fineliner study. Another artist I studied in the project is Will Lindley, he illustrates under the name of ‘Building Illustrations’. For the study I completed below, I used permanent marker and drew onto acetate as I thought it would look aesthetically pleasing and it I unique and something I have never done before. I had to take into consideration health and safety procedures as I used a scalpel. I had to use a safety rule (metal), cutting mat and cut away from me to avoid any injury.
  • 9. Unit 8 Personal, Portfolio Development & Progression: Personal presentation and communication skills. Portfolio presentation techniques. How have you presented your work? Did you make particular use of photography or presentation boards? How have you considered clarity of information in your sketchbooks and boards? Identifying and pursuing progression goals What evidence do you have of research into progression? Photos of open days, website research? What have you learned so far? So far, I have visited two open days, UAL: Chelsea and Arts Uni Bournemouth. I have discovered that I would definitely like to do a Graphic Design degree because it interests me greatly and I have a passion to develop my knowledge in this field. Out of these two Uni’s I preferred Bournemouth as the atmosphere was welcoming and the course looked like something I would want to complete. I have booked other open days which I ma going to attend as well, for example Camberwell, Wimbledon and Kinsgton. I have presented my work in various different ways including in a sketchbook, on my blog and on presentation boards. I have taken photographs to present my final sculpture because it showed them in an aesthetic way and the photos portrayed the texture, colour, and showcased the interesting shadows which were casted when put under a light. I used presentation boards to present my sculpture as well as then it could be shown to a wider audience. I have also used presentation boards to present my final poster commissioned by The National Trust as it looks neat, professional and clearly illustrates what the poster would look like big scale. The presentation boards are easy to understand and aesthetic to look at. I have used a tumblr blog to present my all of my work because it is an easy virtual way of people navigating around my portfolio. I have included images of my work on the blog and explained them. On my blog I have also put the artist that inspired me and the Professional Practice Case Studies.
  • 10. Opinion and Evaluation: Opinion: When I pulled the image of my area out of the box, I’m going to be honest, I was disappointed as I thought that my area was very boring and did not include many objects which were interesting to me to draw or even look at. However when I got into it and started to get to know my area, it quickly grew on me die to the different textures present in my area. The range of different shapes an objects in my area also make it more enjoyable than I originally thought. Through experimenting and recording my area in different ways, I have developed a wide variety of different ways you can make a boring area look appealing for example the textures in wood, the different tones present in my area and also the shadows produced. Evaluation: Time Management – The Place In Question project involved a lot of time management, as there was not enough time in lessons to complete all the work, I had to continue working and experimenting with different medias and techniques at home. There were aspects of the project I could not complete at home for example the dry-point printing which had to be done in college due to the lack of tools at home. I think I managed my time very well as I was able to complete all the work before the deadline. Research - I had to research into various different aspects while completing The Place In Question project. I researched into a variety of different artists including Ola Liola, Nicolas De Stael, Building Illustrations and Paul Catheral, completing this research enabled me to build up knowledge about how different artists work and the way they work, I also found it interesting why the artists use the medias they do. I decided to research these artists because their work stood out to me and interested me. Researching these artists also provided me with the inspiration and drive to complete my own work in the style of theirs. Development - The Place In Question project included many stages, which involved me in developing my ideas and taking them further for example the A2 study of my area which started out as four small compositions in my sketchbook to the 3D sculpture and finally the final outcome which was a leaflet for That National Trust promoting the vulnerability of the environment and how it needs to be looked after. In my opinion I developed my ideas to the best of my ability as I experimented with ideas a lot, especially for my final outcome where I played around with different shapes and sizes to see which one worked the best and which was was the most well suited to the final outcome of a poster. In my opinion I could have developed my A2 study more as I went straight from 4 small compositions into a huge piece of work which I was not used to. I could have increased the size before going large. I could have done mini versions to see if it would work well before completing the big final study which actually I was very happy with as I went out of my comfort zone and used spurts of colour. Experimenting more could have influenced the final design. Final Outcomes - The Place in Question project led me to having two different final outcomes, the 3D sculpture developed from my area and also the poster commissioned for The National Trust to promote the vulnerability of the environment. If I was given a chance to repeat the project again, I could possibly create my own font to be used on the final poster which would make it more well suited to the subject area and also make the poster more personal. I think this would have made a great edition to my project as it would have shown the variety in my skills. I would also maybe design my own logo for The National Trust. Making different variations of the poster would also make a great edition to my project as it would mean there would be a range of different posters which would work together to persuade people to look after the environment. During the course of this project I have learnt how to Dry-Point Print which I found very engaging due to the fact that I had never done it before and I liked the process. I was also very happy with my final outcomes.
