WEB RESEARCH
•When you search using the internet you can get
way too many results.
•Some of these may not be relevant or suitable
or reliable.
•Remember that ANYONE can publish on the
web.
HOW DO YOU EVALUATE A WEBSITE’S
CREDIBILITY?
YOU DO THE C.R.R.a.P. TEST!
C IS FOR CURRENCY (timeliness)
(is the information up to date?)
• How recent is the information?
• Can you locate a date when the page(s) were
written/created/updated?
• Based on your topic, is it current enough?
R IS FOR RELEVANCE
(is the information suitable for this task?)
• Does the information presented help you answer your
questions on the topic?
• Can you understand the information?
R IS FOR RELIABILITY (authenticity)
1. (can you trust the author(ity)?)
• Can you determine who the creator/author is?
• What are their credentials? (education, experience, affiliations)
• Is there a way to contact them?
• Is there evidence that they are experts on the subject?
• Do they use language which demonstrates expertise in the subject?
• Who is the publisher/sponsor of the site?
• Given who the author/publisher/sponsor is, is there any possible
bias?
R IS FOR RELIABILITY (authenticity)
2. (can you trust the information?)
• Can you tell where the information comes from?
(Bibliography/references)
• Does it have working external links to other useful/reliable
sites?
• Is the information primarily facts or opinion?
• Is the information balanced? (Biased?)
• Based on your other research, is the information accurate?
and P IS FOR PURPOSE
(why does the website exist?)
• What's the intent of the website? (to persuade, to sell you something,
etc.)
• What is the domain? (.edu, .org, .com, etc.) How might that indicate
the purpose?
• Are there ads on the website? Could they be indicating a hidden
purpose?
• Who might benefit from a reader believing this website? Consider
who the publisher/sponsor is.
