Topic: Something important that you have learned during this
course that examines the use of data for development purposes in
the context of your own work or community setting
Course: WBGx DBL01x - Data for Better Lives: A New Social Contract
Understanding role of data in development – a theory of change
Source: WDR 2021 report
Data can be created, exchanged, disseminated, reused, repurposed by various actors (individual, private
sector and public sector) as per their need to draw insights for constructive sustainabledevelopment
Since 1990, the global trade in data-driven services has grown
exponentially and now constitutes half of trade in services
Source: WDR 2021 report
However, there needs to be a well-defined social contract to
prevent misuse of data by various actors…
Source: WDR 2021 report
Can be prevented by creating
various layers of governance at
nationaland internationallevels
Hence, there is a need to develop an integrated national data
system (INDS) at region, nation and international level…
Source: WDR 2021 report
Many countries have developed and demonstrated the
benefits of INDS for development, equity among all
strata of society, etc.
• South Africa’s program of monitoring the
performance of government programs.
• Nepal’s Data Literacy Program
• Estonia’s national data system to safely manage
citizens’ personal data
• and many other INDS by various countries.
INDS can be developed to enhance productivity of agricultural
produce and reduce wastage during logistics and storage
Identification of land parcel
size/ownership
Mapping through geo-spatial
technologies, land record surveys
Identification and analysis of
weather, soil, water aspects of
all land parcels
Through technological app,
mapping growing conditions with
best suitable crops
Predictive analysis of when to
sow, water and harvest the
crop
Capturing live information on
weather, rains, etc. through
technological apps
Identification of logistics park,
storage, stockiest and
informing them about the
quanitiy of produce, prior
hand
On real time basis, informing
farmers, when to harvest crops
and sell to stockiest, etc.
Development of Integrated
Agricultural Data System for
the region will have following
benefits.
• Economies of scale &
good quality produce -
producing identified crop in
the best suitable environment
• Reduced storage wastage
– through pre-informed
decision, actors will have
sufficient space
• Saving natural resources
(water, etc.) – by pre-
informing farmers of rains,
they will not water crops
• and many other.
Integrated National Data System for Agriculture for Africa
Thank you…
