This document introduces several types of Hybrid Cellular Layouts (HCLs) that integrate attributes of traditional functional, cellular, and flowline layouts. It describes two HCLs in detail: 1) Cascading flowline layout, which allows machine duplication using a string-to-graph aggregation and planar graph embedding method. 2) Modular layout, which forms part families using a substring clustering method instead of standard cluster analysis of complete part routings. Examples from an industry project are provided to demonstrate the real-world viability of concepts, methods, and software to design HCLs for high-variety low-volume manufacturing facilities.
