This document provides instructions for a research assignment analyzing the opening sequences of three films. Students must complete a detailed analysis of the first two to four minutes of each opening in one of several presentation formats, including a Prezi, video, PowerPoint, or podcast. The analysis must be visual and include examples from the film. Students are prompted to consider how the director engaged the audience, used or subverted stereotypes, and developed the story in the opening. Technical film techniques and relevant film theories are suggested for analysis.

- 1. Research: Three Opening Sequence Analysis For research you need to complete 3 analysis of the first two – four minutes of an opening sequence from a feature length film in detail. You need to present these in 3 different ways e.g. as a prezi, a video, a powerpoint, a word doc, a podcast, an interview (by breaking down the question into smaller parts), nine frame analysis, or any other way that you feel would be effective. You have to make it visual, so include pictures/video. Be specific and give examples, explain simply and use as much media terminology as you know. The questions are a guide to help. 1. How has the Director/Producers tried to engage the audience? Use: Barthes codes, Techincal aspects; Mise-en-scene, Sound design, Editing and Camera work. 2. How have the Director/Producers used or subverted stereotypes of Gender, Age, or Ethnicity? Use: Techincal aspects, Propp’s character spheres, Mulvey’s Gaze theory, Your TV drama booklet will help with stereotype defining. 3. How is the story developed and what can we infer from the first two minutes? Use: Techincal aspects, Binary opposites, Todorov’s narrative stages, Genre conventions.
