VENIS is a project to create a Virtual Enterprise by Networked Interoperability Services for SMEs. The project aims to 1) create a common repository to unify scattered enterprise information, 2) enable distributed data sharing through smart data exchange mechanisms, and 3) provide a business process handler with an interactive assistant for joint projects using automatically collected and merged information from enterprises. The goal is to preserve past investments through seamless integration with existing legacy systems and work procedures.

Objectives … a Virtual Common Repository, able to unify the scattered information of the enterprises, a Distributed Data Sharing , offering a smart mechanism for the exchange of the distributed data, a Business Process Handler , offering an interactive assistant for joint projects and business, where the information is automatically collected, merged and served to enterprises users. VENIS proposes the implementation of an Interoperability Service Utility (ISU) matched with LEs and SME needs and based on: The goal is to preserve the past investments of the enterprises by a seamless integration with the existing legacy working procedures and internal ways of working offering a solution specifically matched to the LEs-SMEs interoperability , by designing, developing and demonstrating a collaboration approach able to cover the gap between the needs coming from different sized companies
- 4. the introduction of a service-based interaction , with the benefit to interoperate with the existing IT infrastructure and procedures; an easy-to-use approach, using existing legacy email interfaces to manage smarter and faster huge amount of information and to create interactive knowledge pools; the joint business approach , where the flow of the joint activities are assisted by an interactive environment where all the related information are available, coming from different enterprises duly networked; the modular approach offered by VENIS, with the possibility to adopt different functional layers, able to smooth the transition between the current way of working and the future collaborative environments. … and Expected Impact The technological progress of VENIS can be summarized as followes:
