Capacity Management and Optimization
MindMap Overview Process Summary
Capacity management and optimization aims to secure optimal usage and
reliability of the site’s provisioned capacity and performance. Therefore, it
should analyze, manage and plan:
• Availability
• Resource and Energy
• Risk
• Quality
There is a strong relation between the level of redundancy, the provisioned
and the used capacity. Overloading the provisioned capacity leads to a loss of
redundancy. This increases risks of failure, but not necessarily to an actual
failure.
To reduce resource and energy consumption, especially under part load
conditions, only enough site systems should be installed to provide sufficient
capacity for a pre-agreed future period, e.g. 18 months.
Additional site systems or services to bring the site to increased capacity, to
mitigate risks or quality issues should be put in place in time to meet the
forecasted requirements.

Lessons learned / Customer experiences
“A System Optimization Assessment was performed at a
customer site. It concluded that the energy use for keeping
temperatures low in the Primary Area was too high.
The suggested solution consisted of constructing a partition
wall to make the Primary Area smaller (and thus less space to
cool) and to adjust the Site Configuration Procedure (SCP) for
the site system accordingly.
After a Service Request was created, executed and approved,
the savings were measurable eight weeks later…”
Final notes
• The process relies on reporting from the Process
“Monitoring & Reporting” and follows the same
site system categories
• Optimization should follow Plan-Do-Study-Act
• It should not be confused with on-site Services,
e.g. projects to improve performance
