The CRC began with Abraham and the patriarchs, tracing its roots back to God's covenant dealings with his people. When it was formally established is less important than this theological foundation.
Key issues in the Christian education debate included parental responsibility, the responsibility of the covenant community, whether Christ is Lord of all life or if piety can be privatized, and the church-world relationship. There was also a debate around public education establishing a civil religion and whether Christian education was anti-Constantinian.
In West Michigan in the early CRC, there were three main viewpoints: those who wanted to progressively Americanize, those with an antithetical confessional view, and those with a Kuyperian view separating Christian
