ITWBCG Green Initiative Global warming, water quality, air pollution, and landfills. Not a typical to-do list for another day at the office, but every workday each of us makes hundreds of decisions that affect all of these issues. Many of these choices are tiny—whether to toss an outdated report in the trash or in the recycling bin. Others are more substantial—whether to install a high-efficiency cooling unit for the building. In every case, though, the decisions make a difference for better or worse. The ITW BCG Green initiative promotes decisions that help address these problems. First, it is important that we gain an understanding of the issues. Second, we must present a business case for greening our office. Third, create a systematic framework to support the program. This would require: Management Support Employee Support An office environment review A policy framework Initiate a Beta group Analysis and findings Refine and launch plan Review progress Green Score
ITWBCG Green Initiative Green terms: Green Strategies: Focus on creating positive environmental attributes throughout an organization. Green Products: Biodegradable or compostable products made from renewable resources, organically grown. Carbon Footprint: A measure of one’s impact on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide. Sustainability: Practices that help to ensure the continued viability of a product or practice well into the future.
ITWBCG Green Initiative How green do we want to be? What shade of green? How does being green integrate with our business plan? How does being green give us a competitive edge?
ITWBCG Green Initiative ITWBCG Green Initiative Different Shades of Green Impact Cost Negative Minimal Moderate Significant Maximal Minimal Moderate Strong Heroic
ITWBCG Green Initiative What shade of “ GREEN ” ? The greenest energy is the energy you don’t use; the greenest paper is the paper you don’t buy. Reduce energy usage by minimizing when electrical equipment or lights are turned on. Go paperless as much as possible, reuse paper when possible, and then recycle. Encourage employees to recycle, and find methods to help employees save on gas. Many (if not most) of the green steps we can take also save money, so… … This is the shade of green we should aim for…
ITWBCG Green Initiative What does “ GREEN ” mean to ITWBCG’s pocketbook? “ Green” = Cost Savings To Our Company

ITWBCG Green Initiative How does being green give us a competitive edge? Reduce expenses to both company and employees 52 people figured in total miles 1847 miles per day (MPD) / Average of 35.5 miles per person ( AMPD) 254 work days in 2008 (WD) $4.00 average per gallon of gas (APG) 21 average fuel efficiency (MPG) 4 day work week = (4) 10 hour days, (4) 8 hour days + (1) 8 hour day at home Cost per week (5) day = ((MPD x 5) / MPG) x APG = $1,759 Cost per week (4) day = ((MPD x 4) / MPG) x APG = $1,407 Cost Savings = $351 Cost per month (5) day weeks = (((MPD x (WD/12)) / MPG) x APG = $7,446 Cost per month (4) day weeks = Cost per month (5)weeks x 0.8 = $5,957 Cost Savings = $1,489 Cost per year (5) day weeks = ((MPD x WD)/MPG) x APG = $89,359 Cost per year (4) day weeks = Cost per year (5)weeks x 0.8 = $71,487 Cost Savings = $17,871 Cost Savings per person per year = $344 Car Pooling (Groups of 3 - 4 people): Cost per year per person = ((AMPD x WD) / MPG) x APG = $1,717 By car pooling the assumption was made we would reduce cost by 2/3. Cost per year per person car pooling = (((AMPD x WD) / MPG) x APG) / 5 = $572 Savings per year per person car pooling = $1,145 A combined savings = $1,489
ITWBCG Green Initiative Carbon Footprint for Car Emissions: Car emissions are calculated by dividing the miles driven by the fuel efficiency of the vehicle. This number is then multiplied by the CO 2 emissions coefficient, 19.36 lbs CO 2 /gallon of gasoline, and then divided by 2204.6 lbs/metric ton to obtain the tons of CO 2 emitted from car travel. CO 2 Emissions ( tons) Based on total miles for the year = 196.2 tons By car pooling the assumption was made we would reduce emissions by 2/3. CO 2 Emissions (tons) Based on total miles for the year car pooling = 65.4 tons CO 2 Emissions (tons) Savings = 130.8 tons
ITWBCG Green Initiative   Boost employee morale: According to the research by two BYU professors, employees on the alternative schedule were happier with their job, compensation and benefits, and they were also less likely to seek work elsewhere. One important aspect of the study, Facer said, was employees' perceptions that the work week took less time away from the family and personal interests. Company image with our customers: An innovative company, in step with the marketplace and the world in which it does business, must be seen by its customers as doing its part in helping our environment.  When asked by a customer what we are doing to reduce our carbon footprint, we can point with pride to the steps we are taking.  We must strive for a well-rounded image with the companies we deal with, as a supplier of goods and services, responsive both to the customer and to our environment.
ITWBCG Green Initiative
ITWBCG Green Initiative Implementations: Community Printer Recycle Bins – aluminum, plastic, paper Car Pooling Energy Saving Initiatives 4 day work week ( at proposal stage) Energy conservation
ITWBCG Green Initiative Summary: By establishing prudent and reasonable measures, ITWBCG can reduce its environmental impact with a lower energy consumption, reduce its electricity expenses, recycle materials that are in abundance in the office, help employees reduce their fuel expenses, enhance ITWBCG’s image with its customer base.
