Advanced materials, such as composites, can enable a technological leap in fuel efficiency that provides strategic military and commercial advantages. Specifically:
1) A 5x improvement in fuel efficiency through all-composite vehicles could reduce oil usage and dependence on foreign oil while improving vehicle performance, range, and logistics.
2) Large-scale demonstrations and a focus on whole-system engineering are needed to build experience with composites and prove capabilities for diverse platforms and production volumes.
3) Leadership is required across government, industry, and programs to create urgency, focus collaboration, and remove barriers to innovating and demonstrating advanced technologies.
