Technology is just a tool. In terms of getting the kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is the most important
"Over the years, state requirements for daily physical education have eroded, and today no states currently have such a requirement (HEALTHY PEOPLE, 1995) ...just 47% of middle/junior high schools and 26% of high schools require at least 3 years of physical education (Pate, Small et all., 1995)." More than a third of young people in grades 9-12 do not regularly engage in vigorous-intensity physical activity. Daily participation in high school physical education classes dropped from 42% in 1991 to 32% in 2001 (CDC, 2002).
According to a study of national costs attributed to both overweight (BMI 25-29.9) and obesity (BMI greater than 30), medical expenses accounted for 9.1 percent of total U.S. medical expenditures in 1998 and may have reached as high as $78.5 billion ($92.6 billion in 2002 dollars) (Finkelstein, Fiebelkorn, and Wang, 2003). Approximately half of these costs were paid by Medicaid and Medicare. The economic cost of obesity in the United States was about $117 billion in 2000. Many people live sedentary lives; in fact, 40% of adults in the United States do not participate in any leisure time physical activity. Overweight adolescents have a 70% chance of becoming overweight or obese adults.
We invest money for our future homes, schooling, and life what about putting money and investments into our health. P.E. is the first part to our health care system solving the obesity crisis. How can we get students to invest in themselves? How can we how students accountable for their effort and work in class?
Biggest role in proving importance of an educational program Source of feedback for the teacher Instant feedback for the student Need many forms of assessment in P.E., the Heart-r.ate monitor is only one way
Pocket PC (Quizzler)-Knowledge Effort (Heart Rate) Behavior Skills What else do we assess? How can we assess all of these at once? PE Manager

Technology!!
“ Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.” Students must be aware that equipment is a privilege (establish guidelines and rules). Organization and daily routines must be established Standardized pre-lesson routines, this is huge in maximizing student learning.

Technology may aid in motivation. Technology also holds student’s accountable for their work in class (YES WORK!) Technology can provide students with specific feedback. Technology allows for proper assessment and exercise prescription.

With P.E. Manager an Tri-fit every student has their own IEP. HR monitors provide students at risk of respiratory and cardiac conditions a safe way to monitor their effort. Every student is different, how can we individualize P.E. H.R. data allows for individual assessment, requires each student to work to their individual best.

"As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others."
Challenge the way things are done! Don’t back away from change simply because of the challenge. Don’t wait for others to do it, you must be the one to take the lead. Remember Education is forever, after 5 years your teaching materials will be considered outdated what will you do? Take your job seriously and professionally and be proud to be part of the most important subject in school. Don’t lower your expectation, keep the bar high. Push the envelope.
