A New Identity
1. Onesimus
For this perhaps is why he was parted from you for a
while, that you might have him back forever, no
longer as a bondservant but more than a
bondservant, as a beloved brother—especially to me,
but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in
the Lord.
Philemon 1:15-16
Our new identity in Christ provides us a new way
to see our earthly relationships.
2. Paul
For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to
be called an apostle, because I persecuted the
church of God. But by the grace of God I am
what I am, and his grace toward me was not in
vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any
of them, though it was not I, but the grace of
God that is with me.
1 Corinthians 15:9-10
The new identity we have in Christ shows us
how to live our lives purposefully.
3. Peter
And he said to them, “Do not be alarmed. You
seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He
has risen; he is not here. See the place where
they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter
that he is going before you to Galilee. There you
will see him, just as he told you.”
Mark 16:6-7
His disciples…and peter?
And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles) so
that they might be with him and he might send them out to
preach and have authority to cast out demons. He
appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name
Peter);James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of
James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is,
Sons of Thunder); Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew,
and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus,
and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas Iscariot,
who betrayed him.
Mark 3:14-19
A disciple…or not?
And Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away, for it
is written, „I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep
will be scattered.‟ But after I am raised up, I will go
before you to Galilee.” Peter said to him, “Even
though they all fall away, I will not.” And Jesus said
to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the
rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.”
But he said emphatically, “If I must die with you, I
will not deny you.” And they all said the same.
Mark 14:27-31
“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you,
that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed
for you that your faith may not fail. And when you
have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”Peter
said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to
prison and to death.” Jesussaid, “I tell you, Peter,
the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny
three times that you know me.”
Luke 22:31-34
But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees,
saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For
he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch
of fish that they had taken, and so also were James and
John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And
Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you
will be catching men.” And when they had brought their
boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Luke 5:8-11
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon
Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living
God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon
Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to
you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you
are Peter, and on this rockI will build my church, and the
gates of hellshall not prevail against it. I will give you the
keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on
earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose
on earth shall be loosedin heaven.”
Matthew 16:15-19
Sometimes, our self-knowledge is wrong,
but the Lord never gives up on the life, the
new identity He gave us.
