This document summarizes a presentation on modeling language diversification phylogenetically. It discusses using statistical methods to analyze large datasets in order to test hypotheses and estimate uncertainty regarding the topology, ages, and root of the language family tree. Specifically, it aims to answer questions about the root age of languages, whether it is around 6000-6500 BP due to Kurgan horsemen or 8000-9500 BP due to Anatolian farmers. The presentation outlines collecting linguistic data, designing a phylogenetic model, performing Bayesian inference to estimate the tree and ages, and validating the model.
