life than can be experienced through any one person or experience, and that we will never truly
understand everything that happens to us or the ones we love. We just have to accept these things,
whether they be good or bad, and hope for the best. The novel is written in first person perspective,
through the eyes of the main character. His name is Miles Halter, and he is a seventeen year old boy

died. Eventually though, The Colonel gets bored playing detective, and he soon stops trying to help.
Pudge, however, keeps on with the investigation, perhaps bordering on the brink of insanity with his
need to fully understand Alaska. He feels as though it s his fault that he didn t understand what was
happening sooner, and that if he figures out what pushed her to this point it will make up for his
ignorance. To really prove the kind of person that Pudge became after Alaska s death, I am going to

It s fair to say that both narratives show how Cortázar tests the boundaries of unreality and reality.
However, Cortázar took alternative approaches in order to present this in the respective stories. In the
case of Las babas del diablo, Cortázar introduced a first and third person narration into the story. The
introduction of a third person narrator highlighted the inner turmoil that Michel was experiencing, thus
forcing the reader to question his reliability as a narrator. As readers we were unable to trust Michel s
version of events yet, we were still unable to completely disregard it as it was clear he had a traumatic
experience in relation to the photograph. This is how Cortázar was able to test the boundaries of
unreality and reality, by leaving his readers in a state of utter confusion. In a completely different, but
equally effective way, Cortázar also expertly tested the boundaries of unreality and reality in
