This document provides background information on indigenous knowledge and agricultural indigenous knowledge in Nigeria. It discusses how indigenous knowledge is often transmitted orally and is at risk of being lost. It also notes that while indigenous knowledge is important, there is limited documentation of it in Africa. The document then justifies the need to develop a knowledge-based expert system to help preserve agricultural indigenous knowledge in Nigeria, especially for managing crop pests and diseases. This system would help document practices, provide solutions to problems, and integrate indigenous knowledge with scientific knowledge to improve agriculture. The scope of the study is to build this expert system with a knowledge base focused on traditional crop storage methods and identifying and controlling pests/diseases using indigenous methods for selected crops.
