This document summarizes a study that tested a new standard setting method called the Analytical Judgment Method for complex performance assessments with multiple performance categories. The method involves panelists making independent categorical assignments for different components of an assessment. The study tested the method on the 1996 8th grade National Assessment of Educational Progress Science Assessment in two sites - Georgia and Michigan. In Georgia, the study compared results using different classification strategies. In Michigan, it compared using different rating scales. The results showed little variation in performance standards based on the analytic strategy, rating scale, or whether panelists discussed ratings.
