1) The study analyzed 3,271 cases of acute pesticide poisoning among agricultural workers in the US from 1998-2005.
2) The majority of cases were employed as farmworkers (71%), with the remaining working in processing/packing plants, as farmers, or other agricultural jobs.
3) Most cases had low severity illness (87%), while 12% had medium severity and 0.6% had high severity illness. One case was fatal.
4) Rates of illness were highly variable among agricultural worker categories but generally showed higher risk for agricultural workers compared to non-agricultural workers, with female agricultural workers at almost double the risk of males.
