Learning Outcomes of the module On completion of the module you will be able to:   1.     Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and practices relating to Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.   2.     Demonstrate a detailed knowledge of research and mainstream theories of Autistic Spectrum Disorders and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
Introduction to the module Autistic Disorder Asperger’s Syndrome Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Focussing on symptoms, diagnosis and treatment.  You will be encouraged to consider the often fine line between Autistic Spectrum Disorders and the subtypes of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
Introduction to the module The aim is to get you thinking about the similarities and differences between these three interrelated common developmental disorders: perhaps to challenge your existing assumptions. to look at the experience of those with the conditions and their carers. to link with the academic literature.

Group Seminars  (o n-campus students only) Group meetings for discussion, debate, workshop activities, videos and looking at research papers/publications. You’ll be expected to do academic reading for these. Week 1 : No Seminar Week 2:  Seminar 1 - Introduction to ADHD Week 3:  Seminar 2 - Introduction to Autistic Spectrum Disorder Week 4:  Seminar 3 - Videos on ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder Week 5:  Seminar 4 - Classification, Assessment and Diagnosis Week 6:  Seminar 5 - Aetiology of ASD and ADHD Week 7:  Seminar 6 - Videos on ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder; or Guest Speaker* Week 8:  Seminar 7 - Videos on ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder; or Guest Speaker* Week 9:  Seminar 8 - Videos on ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder; or Guest Speaker* Week 10:  Seminar 9 - Videos on ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder; or Guest Speaker* Week 11:  Seminar 10 - Videos on ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder; or Guest Speaker* *Guest speakers are to be confirmed.
Assessment Assessment is 100 per cent by exam.   The examination is 2 hours long. Answer 2 questions from 6 (one pair of questions from three questions sets.) Answer one pair of questions from either set A, B, or C: A) i)  ?? ii)  ?? Or B) i)  ?? ii)  ?? Or C) i)  ?? ii)  ?? Distance Learners have a time-limited online equivalent exam with the same structure. Note: Questions will differ from previous years’ exam papers.
