The Enduring Challenge overview
• Launched on 26 January 2017, on www.gov.uk/organisations/defence-and-
security-accelerator
• It’s an open call for proposals and provides a route into defence and
security for anyone who thinks they have a good idea, in the UK or
overseas
• You can submit a proposal any time: we review them monthly with
technical expert assessors, and will respond rapidly, including giving
feedback for unsuccessful bids
• Budget of up to £6m in FY 2017/18 and typically funds proof of concept
research in the range of £50 – 90k for work of up to 9 months duration,
though we are open to make this more flexible in future

A simple way to access UK defence and security customers
• No long applications; no wasted meetings and no questions over
who owns the idea – IP remains with the supplier
• We will connect you with end users who have real needs
• We want to establish long term research based relationships with
academia as well as inviting people to address specific challenges,
for example through sandpits, calls etc.
• We offer funding to develop, experiment and prove your concept,
and provide access to demonstration and testing facilities
Why work with us?
lmason2@dstl.gov.uk

Editor's Notes

  • #12: (How can you get involved) Unlike the Themed Competition, the Enduring Challenge Competition is available to suppliers all year round. Each month, the Accelerator assesses and moderates numerous proposals with a Decision Board making a final FUND or DO NOT FUND decision usually within a further FOUR weeks. Dates associated with these timescales can be found on our website. Successful proposals to be funded are usually informed within one or two days from the Decision Board making its final decisions And unsuccessful proposals will receive constructive and actionable feedback usually within THREE weeks of the Decision Board making its final decisions. So within 11 weeks of submission you should have an answer. If it is going to be any longer than this the team will get in touch with you to tell you why. As an assessor and moderator, I would advise those of you who submit proposals to ensure that you include a suitable and robust military context and exploitation path for your innovation. While expert assessors will grade your submission on its technical and scientific merits, you must remember that military officers will also be part of the process so make sure you explain your work in clear English!
