The use of force may be by the police or the military in law enforcement roles. The force used to
counter the threat must be reasonable, proportionate and discriminatory, and the availability of less
lethal options can potentially enable officers to resolve a situation prior to it becoming absolutely
necessary to use lethal force.
Challenges
Seeking technologies that can temporarily and safely neutralise a violent or armed subject at
distances from 0 m up to 50 m (stretch 70 m), to prevent the escalation of conflict or destruction
of property. The system must :
• be able to accurately, reliably and temporarily neutralise a violent or armed subject
at distances up to 50 m (with a stretch target of 70 m).
• effective against a moving target.
• be suitable for normal dismounted policing duties including routine patrol, public
order and firearms.
• reliable in use and consistent when activated.
• have second or multiple shots readily available.
• able to operate within weather conditions typical for the UK, including rain.
• Additionally, the solution could have the ability to mark a subject in order to
‘identify’ them at a later time

Current themed competition: Telexistence:
Robotics/Haptics/Immersion
DASA is seeking ‘telexistence’ technologies - novel solutions to develop
capabilities to operate in hazardous environments without physically being
present,
Eg
• military personnel,
• emergency services,
• humanitarian workers
This could be include a real-time, remotely operated avatar which relies on the
integration of:
• Telepresence - a visual-audio solution which enables a human operator to
experience the sensation of self-presence in a remote environment.
• Haptic feedback -an immersive solution which transmits sensory
information from the remote environment to the human operative.
• Robotics - a manoeuvrable solution which enables a human operator to
interact with the remote environment.

Phase 1 - £500K available
bids ~ between £10-100K
(No upper limit)
£2.8 million available
Closes: 19th Nov 2020.

Current Themed competition: Unmanned Air Systems in
Urban Environments
DASA is seeking innovative and novel solutions to assist military drone
operators to improve usability in challenging and complex urban operations.
A new working model to accelerate ideas and feed directly into defence
acquisition within Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S). This is designed for
more rapid exploitation of technologies and will provide innovation funding for
mid TRL solutions as well as provide a route for mature ideas to feed into supply
frameworks.
Challenges:
• development of an optimised Unmanned Air System suitable for use in
urban environments.
• develop a human-controlled lethal payload that could integrate with a
platform outlined in the first challenge.
• to demonstrate a full Unmanned Air System with an integrated payload,
bringing together the separate elements of challenges 1 and 2.

  • 14. accelerator@dstl.gov.uk© Crown Copyright 2018 OFFICIAL accelerator@dstl.gov.uk The use of force may be by the police or the military in law enforcement roles. The force used to counter the threat must be reasonable, proportionate and discriminatory, and the availability of less lethal options can potentially enable officers to resolve a situation prior to it becoming absolutely necessary to use lethal force. Challenges Seeking technologies that can temporarily and safely neutralise a violent or armed subject at distances from 0 m up to 50 m (stretch 70 m), to prevent the escalation of conflict or destruction of property. The system must : • be able to accurately, reliably and temporarily neutralise a violent or armed subject at distances up to 50 m (with a stretch target of 70 m). • effective against a moving target. • be suitable for normal dismounted policing duties including routine patrol, public order and firearms. • reliable in use and consistent when activated. • have second or multiple shots readily available. • able to operate within weather conditions typical for the UK, including rain. • Additionally, the solution could have the ability to mark a subject in order to ‘identify’ them at a later time Further details here © Crown Copyright 2019 Phase 1 Closes: 15 October 2020 Total Funding £500K Track 1 - Low TRL entry to finish at TRL 4 / 5 after 3-months, ~£50K bids Track 2 - Mid TRL entry to finish at TRL 7 after 3-months. ~£75K. © Crown Copyright 2020 Current themed competition: Less Lethal Weapons Innovation for a Safer Future
