This document summarizes research on a course that used Motivational Active Learning (MAL) techniques. The course combined theoretical concepts, programming, and mathematical modeling. Students worked collaboratively in small groups with interactive activities, discussions, and gamification elements like badges. Evaluations found high student engagement and understanding, as well as improved learning outcomes compared to traditional lectures. The researchers concluded MAL is effective when combining collaborative and competitive elements, and that course design should account for different learning styles and allow adaptability. Future work will refine the gamification elements and assessment methods.
