This document describes an activity to observe different types of waves. Students will use a rope, ribbon, spring, and boat to demonstrate transverse, longitudinal, and surface waves. Transverse waves involve vibration perpendicular to the direction of wave travel, seen when pulling a ribbon attached to a rope. Longitudinal waves involve vibration parallel to travel direction, seen when compressing and extending a spring. Surface waves on water involve an orbital motion of particles without transporting them from their original position.
