Wikipedia: • A program in which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification from its original design. • Open source code is typically created as a collaborative effort in which programmers improve upon the code and share the changes within the community.
- 7. 7 Why Open Source Adapt? • Major benefits of a community led development • Provide size and scale to invest in ongoing development • Establish industry wide standards for responsive design in elearning • Free, non-proprietary tool , complementary to Moodle • Ability to share content developed with the same tool • City & Guilds is a charity and we like to give back to the wider education and vocational learning community • No competitor concerns – Companies may offer commercial services around an open source product as they do with Moodle, customers will decide based on service, price, design, relationships etc

- 12. 12 Responsive Elearning and Adapt Adapt is a framework designed to develop elearning content that responds and adapts to screen size. Whilst there is a place for Apps, the need for multi-device delivery means an HTML5 responsive design delivers many benefits: • Single version to build and maintain • Scrolling and other design options • Easier translations • Accessibility Still technical/design issues e.g. best way to provide offline access

- 17. 17 What Is An Open Source Licence? An open source licence must: • grant the licensee the right to distribute the program themselves, • grant access to the program’s source code • grant the right to modify the program • grant the right to distribute modified versions of the program • allow use of the program by all persons or groups in all fields of endeavour • apply to everyone who receives the program, without the need for any additional agreements • apply to the program it licenses, whether the program is obtained as part of a group of programs, or on its own • allow distribution with any other software and in any form • the licence does allow companies to provide commercial services around the program eg Moodle, Drupal etc
