Adverbs and Expressions of
Frequency
EFE 4C
+++ •always
++ •often
+ •usually
+- •sometimes
-+ •hardly ever
-- •never
I always get up at 7.00 during the week. I
start work at 8.00 every day.
I often go to the cinema after work, about
seven or eight times a month.
I usually finish work at 6.00, but on Fridays
we stop at 3.00.
I sometimes meet a friend for lunch, about
once or twice a month.
I hardly ever go to the theatre, only once
or twice a year.
I never have coffee. I don’t like it.
HOW OFTEN …?
Use adverbs and expressions of frequency to say
how often you do something
A. How often do you go to the cinema?
B. We go to the cinema twice a month. We
always go on Saturday evening.
HOW OFTEN …?
Adverbs of frequency go BEFORE all main verbs
but AFTER “be”
I always go to the gym in the morning, but I’m
often late
In negative sentences they go between
“don’t/doesn’t” and the verb
She doesn’t usually drink coffe in the morning
HOW OFTEN …?
Use a positive verb with “never” and “hardly ever”
He never smokes (He never doesn’t smoke)
She hardly ever drinks beer (she doesn’t hardly ever
drink beer)
We are never stressed (we aren’t never stressed)
I eat vegetables every day
We eat out on Saturday every week
She meets her friends every month
I meet all my family at Easter every year
(a day, a month, a week, a year …)
We eat meat only once a week
I come to English class twice a week
He goes on holiday three times a year
HOW OFTEN …?
Expressions of frequency usually go at the end of a
sentence or verb phrase
I have English classes twice a week
She doesn’t work every day
