- 18. My topic is aging population in this assignment. In the first graph, I used single number to visualize the large amount of aging population in the U.S., which is based on principle of similarity. I highlighted ”95 million” and “increasing” in the title so that the audiences can tell that aging population will increase to a large number in 2060. In the second graph, I compared the amount of aging population to the total population in the U.S. I used a stacked bar graph here to show the increasing trend of aging population, because the stacked graph can be useful to visualize the huge comparison. The principal of similarity and enclosure have both been used in this graph. I enclosed the bar of 2060 and kept the color of orange consistent with the headline. In the final graph, I would like to present how the aging population is growing compared to the young population. Therefore, I used a line graph to compare these two demographical groups. In 2043, the amount of aging population will be equal to the young population and it will keep increasing until 2060. The principles of proximity and similarity are used in the third graph. Legends are placed next the lines and colors are consistent with the headline highlights. My target audiences are ordinary people who are interested in the issue of the aging population. They may have little knowledge of data visualization. Therefore, all my graphs need to be simple and easy to be understood. This assignment is different from past assignments because the data is more complicated. I had to think about the story first and then organize the group data to create all of these graphs. I used lots of filtering functions in excel to find sufficient data for my graphs. In addition, I did several calculations to get results during the process because some data were not given directly in the spreadsheet.
