lowest-cost node first.
o Time Complexity: The time complexity of UCS is O(b^(C*/ε)), where C* is the cost
of the optimal solution and ε is the smallest edge cost.
o Space Complexity: The space complexity of UCS is also O(b^(C*/ε)) since it keeps
all generated nodes in memory.
4. Iterative Deepening Search (IDS):
o Completeness: IDS is complete, as it incrementally deepens the search, exploring all
nodes up to a certain depth.
o Optimality: IDS is optimal if the step costs are uniform, similar to BFS.
o Time Complexity: The time complexity of IDS is O(b^d), as it explores the nodes
multiple times but remains linear in space.
o Space Complexity: IDS has a space complexity of O(bd), which is more efficient than
BFS and comparable to DFS.
Informed Search Algorithms
1. Greedy Best-First Search:
o Completeness: Greedy Best-First Search is not guaranteed to be complete, as it may
follow paths that do not lead to the goal.
o Optimality: This algorithm is not optimal, as it may settle for a suboptimal solution if
a more promising path appears to lead to the goal.
o Time Complexity: The time complexity of Greedy Best-First Search is O(b^m),

2. A Search*:

3. Iterative Deepening A (IDA)**:

ensuring that all nodes are eventually explored.
o Optimality: IDA* is optimal if the heuristic is admissible and consistent, similar to
A*.
o Time Complexity: The time complexity is O(b^d), comparable to A*, but it can be
more efficient due to the reduced memory usage.
o Space Complexity: IDA* has a space complexity of O(bd), making it more space-
efficient than A* by not storing all nodes simultaneously.
4. Bidirectional Search:
o Completeness: Bidirectional Search is complete if both the forward and backward
searches are complete.
o Optimality: It is optimal if both searches are optimal and meet at the correct solution
path.
o Time Complexity: The time complexity is O(b^(d/2)), where d is the depth of the
shallowest solution, making it significantly faster than unidirectional searches.
o Space Complexity: The space complexity is also O(b^(d/2)), as it only needs to store
nodes at half the depth, making it more space-efficient than traditional methods.
Note for students:-
The performance of search algorithms is measured by their completeness, optimality, time
complexity, space complexity, and overall efficiency. Uninformed algorithms like BFS, DFS,
UCS, and IDS are basic strategies that do not rely on domain knowledge, making them less
efficient in large or complex search spaces. In contrast, informed algorithms like Greedy
Best-First Search, A*, IDA*, and Bidirectional Search use heuristics to guide the search,
improving efficiency and often finding solutions faster and with fewer resources. Each
algorithm has its strengths and weaknesses, and the choice of algorithm depends on the

Definition and Scope: o AI vs. Human Intelligence: AI attempts to simulate human cognitive functions. However, AI systems are not bound by biological limitations, potentially surpassing human capabilities in specific tasks. o Narrow AI vs. General AI: Narrow AI (Weak AI) refers to systems designed to perform a narrow task (e.g., facial recognition or internet searches). General AI (Strong AI), on the other hand, would perform any intellectual task a human can do, with the ability to reason, plan, learn, and communicate in a general manner. 2. Components of a Production System 1. Rule Set (Productions): o Structure: Each rule in a production system is typically in the form of an IF- THEN statement. The IF part represents the condition, and the THEN part represents the action to be taken if the condition is met. o Example: In an expert system for medical diagnosis, a rule might be: IF the patient has a fever AND the patient has a rash, THEN the patient may have measles. o Types of Rules: Production systems can have different types of rules, including deterministic rules (where the outcome is certain) and probabilistic rules (where the outcome is based on probabilities). 2. Working Memory: o Definition: Working memory is the dynamic database that holds all the facts and data that the system is currently processing.
