George Crum, a chef in New York in 1853, accidentally invented potato chips when an angry customer complained twice about his french fries. In response, Crum sliced potatoes very thin and fried them until crispy, creating the first potato chips which the customer enjoyed. Potato chips quickly became popular with people making and selling them locally. In the 1920s, machines were invented to mass produce potato chips and new packaging methods helped chips stay fresher longer, fueling the potato chip industry. Herman Lay built the first potato chip factory in 1932, establishing the Lays brand across America.
