Partner Basic Rules Activity

                  You have 15 minutes.

Raise your hand when you're done for me to check.

Once I have checked, place all of the pieces back into the
baggies. After this, read pages 110 - 111.

                                                             3
2.5 Rephrasing the Basic Rules

1.) Express each sentence without using variables:

a. Dividing is the same as multiplying by the reciprocal.

b. Subtracting is the same as adding the opposite.

c. If you have a product of two numbers, and you find the
products of the opposites of the numbers, you get the same
result.

d. If you multiply two numbers together and the result is 1,
the numbers are reciprocals.

                                                               4
Binary Operation:
Specially defined operation that takes 2 numbers and
produces one number.

1.) The binary operation is defined by the following rule.
        x y = 3x + y

a. Explain how to find 416 = 18

b. Evaluate 614.

c. Is 1 commutative? In other words, does 1 have an any-order
property?

                                                                  5
Use the any-order, any-grouping properties and the
Distributive Property to simplify each expression.
Remember to combine like terms.

a. 2(x + 4) + 7 b. 13 + 3(1 + 2x) c. 3(2x - 5) - 8

d. 4(x + 3) + 7(x + 3) e. 6(3 - 2x) - 3(x + 1)

                                                              6
Find each product. Look for patterns.

a. (10/13 54) 13

b. (10/13 81) 13

c.(10/13 1113) 13

d. Describe a pattern.
