Algorithmic Trading in
Context
• How does governance
work in multi-
jurisdictional locations?
• How should you take
into account associated
regulatory
expectations?
• What about Blockchain
and FinTech?
• What can be learnt from
previous regulatory
fines over office controls
Keeping it simple
Governance:
 Type of aircraft (Type of Algo)
 How high you are flying (Stress tests)
 Speed (number of messages per second)
 Fuel on board (size of positions)
 Number of passengers (what could happen if thigs went
wrong)
 Distance to nearest airport (How quickly can you get out of
trouble)
 Body check prior to each flight (regular information)
 Detailed check if something goes wrong (error resolution
process that triggers detailed assessment)
Testing:
 Are you using it outside/inside (dictates type of testing)
 Blue and oil based (does it do what it says on the tin)
 Dry's in 1 hour (test for likely scenarios)
 Lasts for 10 years (test for exceptional circumstances)
 Good for hard wood only (what market conditions does it
work in?)
Risk focused:
 Is the boat big enough?
 Controls need to be flexed to the complexity of the algo
 Simple algos do not always equate to low risk
 Does senior management know if you are catching small fry
or whoppers?
Training and competence:
 Underlying everything is quality of people
 Is there a training program?
 How to articulate to senior management?
Don’t be slow on the
uptake
It is solving a problem It’s a must have Not a fad
