• Ambient display
• Transitioning information from screens to the physical environment
• Seamlessly integrating into natural environments

Our Approach: Static and Dynamic Tatami Display
Ambient Display Utilizing Anisotropy of Tatami
• Tatami is a traditional Japanese flooring material
• Allow information and art to blend naturally into living space
Static display Dynamic display
• Primarily used in traditional japanese rooms and architecture
• Decreasing production year by year
• Aim to discover new value in tatami
8
Tatami: Symbol of Japanese Culture
9
Tatami: Tatami Description
• Igusa (rush)
• Natural fragrance and texture
• Static display
• Washi (paper)
• Resistant to moisture and dirt
• Dynamic display
(Surface)
(Base)
• Directionality exists on the tatami surface (Anisotropy)
• Color appears to change due to the anisotropy of the surface
• Rotating the tatami changes the brightness of the surface
10
Principle: Reason for Color Change
11
Static Display
Check the lighting conditions in the venue
Sketch the design
Adjust the design to fit the exhibition space size
12
Static Display: Production Process
a
b
c
Cut materials according to the template (both base and surface)
13
Static Display: Production Process
d e
Tatami is cut and folded
Install in the exhibition space
• Requires skill, but results in a highly expressive artwork

Dynamic Display
• 1 Module Consists of 16 Circular Tatami
• Each Module Has a Side Length of 26.8 cm and a Height of 44 mm
17
Dynamic Display: System Configurations
18
• Exhibited for one month in Kyoto and Nagoya in Japan
• Static Display
• Maintains the functionality of tatami that can be stepped on, while retaining
artistic value
• Dynamic Display
• Fusion of technology and traditional culture, along with stability
19
Exhibition
• Static Display
• Creation of design tools
• Dynamic Display
• Interactive experience
• Color Expression
• Not fully investigated
• User Study
• Only interviews conducted during demo this time
• Use Case
• Expanding expressive capabilities and providing interactive experiences

Background
Digital signage does not blend well with
natural environments.
Motivation
Display adapted to Japanese culture and
the creation of new value for tatami.
Our approach Ambient Display Utilizing Anisotropy of Tatami
Implementation Static and Dynamic display
Limitation
Static: Craftsmanship is required
Dynamic: Load-bearing capacity
Future work
Creation of design tools and providing
interactive experiences
Investigation of color expression.
