An empty soda can has been submitted as evidence. Name at least two forensic examinations
which can be completed on the empty soda can. Using the Scientific method, explain how the
empty soda can should be analyzed.
Solution
Fingerprints on the soda can and saliva residue at the mouth of the soda can can be present on the
empty soda can. They can help in identifying the person who used it.
The fingerprint from a smooth surface can be visualised by sprinkling fingerprint powder like
aluminum flakes. If prints appear, they are photographed and the prints are lifted with an
adhesive tape for further examination.
DNA of all humans is 99.9% similar. Only a small fraction of it is unique to each individual.
Using these small fragments of unique one can identify the person. These repeat sequences are
called variable number tandem repeats. The dna fragments are mixed with probe molecules
andthe probe molecules hybridize to DNA fragments containing the repeat sequences and excess
probe molecules are washed away. The blot is then exposed to an X-ray film. Fragments of DNA
that have bound to the probe molecules appear as dark bands on the film.
