Summary of Action Plan
This information was gathered in an interview with Andrea Williams, Principal of Theresa Bunker
Elementary School. The action plan most recently implemented was the Continuous Improvement
Plan (CIP) for the 2015 2016 school year. This is the strategic action plan that is required by the state
each year. The district sets forth goals each year with input from the principals in June. The schools in
this district start each year planning the CIP for the current school year. This plan has 5 goals included
in the plan. The first goal is that 75% of students in K 3 will score proficient on the state s reading
inventory assessment. A second goal is for 75% of students in 3rd 6th to meet or exceed the state s
percent proficient in the state s ELA and Math standardized tests. A third goal is for students in 1st 6th
to show growth by having an SGP score of 40 or higher on the spring testing of the STAR math and

Pathos In Rigoberta Menchu
I, Rigoberta Menchú, is the personal narrative of a Guatemalan Quiché indigenous woman and her
experiences as part of a culture and people severely discriminated against. Menchú speaks of life for a
vast majority of the indigenous population in Guatemala. She describes a life of extreme poverty
plagued by violence, starvation, and socio economic inequality. Her people have been systematically
oppressed since the Spanish conquest of Guatemala and have been forced into a subservient position
to an elite minority who controls the means of production. These elitists are a portion of a larger group
that Menchú refers to as ladinos. A ladino is any Guatemalan who rejects his or her indigenous
heritage and who views himself or herself as superior to the Maya people. The death of Menchú s
family prompts her to speak on behalf of all indigenous people and dedicate her life to overthrowing
the relation of domination and exclusion that characterizes Guatemalan society. In order to accomplish
this, Menchú acts pragmatically and adopts techniques from ladino culture, such as the Spanish
language and Christianity, to more effectively protect her own culture. Menchú uses pathos, appealing
to her readers empathy, to gain their support for her human rights efforts by demonizing ladino culture

sepsis at MacNeal Hospital. Sepsis is a potentially fatal host response to infection that occurs as a

Factors That Influence Extremism
Politics. Interpretation. Media. These are all aspects that play a role in how people perceive the world.
Because of these ideas and ideologies that are influenced by society, some people may believe that
certain religions such as Islam; may influence extremism. Yet, this is not the truth. Furthermore,
extremism is not created by religion or in this case Islam.
For the argument that Islam does not influence extremism, one must understand and educate one s self
regarding the factors that create, influence, and enhance extremism. Examples of such factors that may

The freedom to read and write freely is fundamentally American. It allows citizens to express
themselves without fearing repercussions from the government, or fellow citizens. It allows readers to
read freely and make their own decisions. Book banning would create a narrow minded population,
who don t know how to reason for themselves.
Thinking again of the argument of preserving family values, it must be taken into consideration the
kind of television that is currently airing. In many ways TV is more graphic, and explicit. Yet it is
tolerated, whereas even just crude language is apparently cause enough to ban a book.
Parents are also worried about when their children who are reading above grade level are assigned
books intended for students three to four grades above them. This can expose younger readers to
seemingly inappropriate material. However there are other options, parents can talk to teachers and
ask for more age appropriate books for their younger readers.
Banning books violates the rites that our founding fathers fought so hard for in the Revolutionary War.
