An Introduction to Pinyin:
Initials and Finals
By Morgan Rothschild Academy
Introduction
• Since 2013, the Morgan Rothschild Academy has
provided early childhood education services for a broad
range of international students living in Shanghai,
China. Designed specifically for children between 18
months and six years of age, the Morgan Rothschild
Academy curriculum includes instruction in pinyin, the
official phonetic system for translating Mandarin
pronunciations into the Roman alphabet.
Pinyin, which derives its name from the Chinese
characters for “spelled-out sounds,” has served as an
international standard since 1982. At its core, pinyin
relies on the clusters of elements known as initials and
finals.
Pinyin
• The majority of initials contain a consonant sound
similar to many Western consonants, while finals
typically include a delicately articulated vowel sound. In
pinyin, the pronunciation of initials follows relatively
simple rules, the majority of which are intuitive for those
familiar with the Roman alphabet.
Finals, on the other hand, are much more nuanced:
single Chinese characters can have a pinyin analog of up
to four Roman characters. As such, proficiency in the
pinyin phonetic system requires an intimate knowledge
of all pronunciation conventions, as well as the
diacritical markers that differentiate their written forms.
