This document discusses two methods for analyzing coal: proximate analysis and ultimate analysis. It focuses on explaining the steps for proximate analysis, which determines the moisture content, volatile matter, ash content, and fixed carbon of a coal sample. The moisture content is measured by heating a sample to remove water and calculating the weight loss percentage. Volatile matter is measured by heating the sample to 925°C for 7 minutes and calculating the weight loss percentage. Ash content is measured by heating the sample to 700-750°C for 30 minutes and calculating the percentage of residue remaining. Fixed carbon is the remaining percentage after subtracting moisture, volatile matter, and ash content from 100%.
