The Script
Music Video – Man Who Can’t be Moved
The video starts with different shots of the lead singer of the band walking down
the street. Before the song beings, the camera cuts 11 times to show different
shots of him. This allows the audience to see who he is and make first
impressions of him. Because he is the lead singer, he represents the band,
therefore how the audience sees him, reflects on the rest of the band. He is
dressed casually in black jackets and trousers. This conforms to typical
conventions of pop rock and indie genre, so the audience can tell what genre the
band performs. When the lyrics starts, the singer immediately starts lip-syncing
and looks straight into the camera, having direct address with the audience.
When he mimes the lyrics “where I first met you” there’s a close up shot of him
Looking straight at the audience. He’s drawing in young teenage girls, who are the majority of their target
audience, and it’s as if he is singing to them. He’s using his looks to sell the image of him and his band. This is
evidence of Goodwin’s theory. There are frequent close up shots of him which promotes the band and the
video. The Script is a pop rock band and there are conventions and stereotypes of
the genre throughout the video. There are wide shots so the audience can see all
the band. The lead singers is slightly in front with the rest of the band behind
them which is typical of the genre. There are close ups of the bands , especially of
the guitar which is a typical convention of pop rock music. These shots help to
conform to and construct peoples ideas and stereotypes towards the genre.
There are more close ups of the lead singer than there is of instruments showing
that the band is more interested in trying to sell themselves using the lead singer.
Another convention of the genre are the band’s clothing. They are all wearing
black or dark causal clothing such as jeans and jackets, which is typically seen in
pop rock videos. The lead singer, who is the person that the audience sees the
most, is wearing a leather jacket which is linked to the rock and pop rock genre. It
makes him look edgy which is a convention of the genre.
Analysis
Dyer stated that pop bands are photocopies of other bands. The Script has
included lots of conventions of the pop rock genre, and therefore, their
video doesn’t stand out from other videos in the same genre. For example,
the clothing that they are wearing is seen a lot in this genre. OneRepublic
wear the same thing that The Script are wearing in their videos. Both lead
singers are wearing a leather type jacket and the rest of the band behind
them are wearing dark or black casual clothing. Both of the lead singers are
also seen singing into a microphone are a mid shot so that the audience can
see what’s going on behind them, but also see their face well and clearly.
This proves the point that bands are photocopies of other bands.
The relationship between lyrics and visuals are illustrative because the
video literally shows a man not wanting to move until his girlfriend or ex
girlfriend comes to meet him, so the video is narrative based. The editing is used to drive the narrative forward. A
editing technique that was used in the video was the time lapse that emphasised how long he had been waiting
for the girl to come meet him. Time lapse was used to amplify the lyrics of the video. It shows the audience how
much time has gone by, by showing the watch change time quickly and showing seasons change. The audience
sees how long the lead singer is willing to wait for the girl he’s singing about.
Digipak – The Script: Science and Faith
The hands also conform to
the title. The hands on the
back to the album could
show prayer and have
connotations religion and
faith. The hands at the front
show a bond like a
handshake

Inside the cover, there’s a booklet
which contains lyrics of each song
track. There’s also thank you
messages from the band including
a message written to the fans that
have bought the album. This is to
create the image that The Script
care about their fans and the
album is for them

The band is looking away from
the camera. Creates enigma.
The audience want to find out
what the band is looking at. By
listening to the album, they
might find out. Also shows
them to be a serious band, not
just performers
The hands show that the album is about love.
Most of the singles released by the band are
about love and relationships so it conforms to
their image.

Typography of the band
name has been kept
consistent on the past 2
albums, and has become
their logo. Easily
recognisable to everyone,
not just fans. The band
name is on the top of the
CD cover so introduces the
band straight away
All albums include the
record label, companies
involved in making the
album and productions
and distribution credits.

Pop rock/indie albums don’t usually
feature the band or artist on the front of
the album. The Script have used hands to
symbolise what the album is about. We
are making a digipak for a rock album, so
we are following conventions by not
have the band on the cover
Acts as a logo for the band. People can
easily recognise the band from the
font. Clicking the logo makes it easy to
get back to the home page
The first thing an audience sees
in the bands website are pictures
of the band during live
performances. The picture
changes every few seconds. This
creates an image of the band,
showing the audience that they
are performers and a serious
band that cares about the music.
Pictures also show them to be
happy to show fans that they are
glad to be performing for them.
Used as a marketing tool so that
fans who haven’t been to one of
their concerts see what they’re
missing out on and want to buy
tickets.

Themed around The Script’s
latest album, following the
same colour scheme and
pictures of the band. This
scheme and layout are
constant throughout the
whole of the website.

Website

Easy for the audience to navigate their way around the
website. The website meets the need of their target
audience, who are teenagers aged between 12 – 18. The
band is on lots of popular social networking sites, which
is shown throughout the website as there are hyperlinks
to the sites. Also there isn’t lots of writing that the
audience has to read. Information is presented short and
simple with the option for audiences to read more. The
majority of The Script fans are girls, so there are pictures
of the band throughout the site, most of which show the
lead singer very clearly.

Merch and music store . The band
is using the website to sell their
music and other products such as
clothing and accessories. You can
also buy tickets online which
makes it easy for fans to find out
about concerts and festivals the
band are playing and buy tickets.
There are links through the whole
website to buy their album online
or from iTunes and to buy concert
tickets

Hyperlinked to social networking
sites. Dyers claims that pop stars
and bands use social network
sites to create their own persona,
as other people update the
official website. The social
networking sites make the
audience feel as if they have a
personal relationship with the
band and they feel closer to
them. The audience is able to
have a constant interaction with
the band.
