One production company is shown followed by two opening credits presenting the film. A piano begins to play at 24
seconds then a bright, orange sunset fades in along with the opening cast credits. Whilst the credits fade in and out
you can see a person rowing a little boat in the middle of the lake. This is shown in an extreme-long shot. There is a
cut to a long shot and the title of the film, The Notebook, appears in exactly the same way as the cast. There does
not have to be a dramatic entrance for the film title, it is equal to the cast.
The transitions from each shot are smooth and flow in time with the music. This allows a calm and relaxing view.
The sun is lowering in each shot and you wander where this person is travelling to. The low key lighting creates a
silhouette of the person which adds a sense of mystery. The top left screens shot is taken as if we are gliding
along the water with the boatman. The Extreme-Long shots suggest isolation and loneliness and whether them
being ostracised has any significance. In the bottom right shot it’s a long shot with a dozen white birds flying
across the setting. Then the boatman gliding past underneath them unaware. Within the first two minutes the
audience knows the cast and crew however is left questioning where the boatman is heading.
